Fought for the side of ‟freedom”, came back to vicious systemic racism. God bless our non-white soldiers, past, present, and future.

Due to a control tower error she was killed in an air crash in 1944. Her brother was killed a couple of days later in combat in France.

Her family had to fight to have her and her brother buried in a cemetery in Portland Oregon, because of restrictions on where Asians could be interred.

My great aunt was a WASP pilot, made it through the war years, ended up dying in a plane crash in the 50’s. My understanding is that she was flying from Chicago to KC, got into some heavy/ low clouds, didn’t trust her instruments, and ended up in a corn field.

What a beautiful woman.

Anyone know the purpose of those large flaps on the pilot pants are for?

They're jodhpur, riding pants that keep things from getting hung up on your feet while letting you move easily at the hips. They were popular with early pilots who were often calvary men and became a fashion and were useful in early open cockpit planes.

Cool pic. But not sure she should have that cigarette so close to the plane - aren’t they covered with varnish?

Fabric Dope, essentially a nitrate compound. You're right though, extremely flammable stuff
