A favorite meal of many of the miners, was the Cornish pasty, as many of the miners immigrated to the u.s, were Cornish, similar to a piecrust, filled with sliced or ground meat, veggies and potatoes, they wrapped thier pasties in cloths to keep their food warm, until lunch time. N. Michigan still has numerous locations that specialize in baking pasties.if you get a chance, try one, they are some real good eating.

I had my first pasty in October in Marquette! Lovely meal. Beautiful area. As I understand, the place I ate at was a pillar of the pasty community. Sadly has closed according to google.

Just remember to say "pasty" with a short "a". Those of us from the area will laugh at you if you say it with a long "a." We'll still give you one though. gif

There were also quite a few Italian immigrants there as well. My grandfather made a living translating for them.

Every one has a mustache, and a lunch pail.

Some of those lunch pails probably have pasties in them. One of the best regional foods you can still get in the upper peninsula of Michigan. A pocket of dough normally filled with potatoes, rutabaga, onion and often beef. Sooo gooood.

Super cool group shot. They’re probably all 17.

This looks like it could be from a Wes Anderson film, the way the camera is positioned.

The guy on the left probably isn’t really, but he’s giving off serious mine owner vibes with his top hat and vest and all.

Love that part of MI. It’s so rich in history and so beautiful. I think there’s still an old copper mine near Houghton that you can tour.

Tough men doing a dangerous, rough job for measly pay in most mines. Kids today have no appreciation of how their great grandfather's toiled in these jobs back in the day. Men were hurt or died in those mines and respiratory problems were common place.

There are plenty of young people who work in factories or the trades. I'm one of them. I've been an ironworker 12 years and I'm only 33.

Having respect for the conditions people used to toil under really comes down to whether you heard stories from older relatives about sketchy work places of the past or not.

Clearly you’re ignorant of conditions mine workers endure. You were so anxious to use the clever line you’ve read in another Reddit post to’ e gone and exposed yourself. Ironic really.
