Hi all - I’ve recently moved to the area for my work and I know there is (or used to be?) a large Portuguese population in Newark.

I want to use the opportunity to fulfill a lifelong goal of learning the basics of (European) Portuguese. My grandparents were fluent in European Portuguese when they were alive and many of my extended relatives are as well, but I don’t see them often enough to learn from them.

I’m trying to get to an A2 certification level (~3-6 months of learning) so I can pass the CIPLE language test at the Portugal Consulate.

Does anyone know if there’s a class-style setting where adults in Newark can learn European Portuguese? Preferably something done on nights and/or weekends to fit with work.

A cursory Google search has found me lots of private tutors and online classes but I haven’t found in-person classes, which would be ideal for me if it exists anywhere near Newark.

I'm learning Brazilian Portuguese through ABC languages. They're online courses, but I couldn't find any language courses that were in person post pandemic. My experience has been pretty good actually. Much better than other online courses I took during the pandemic through other companies.

Don't rule out the online courses. You just have to find one that works for you.

If you find in person language courses that has the Brazilian direct, let me know though 🤣

Will do! I’ve got a minor lead on some being possibly available at Rutgers-Newark so I’ll look into that but otherwise I suppose an online course would be okay if I can get 1:1 pronunciation time with someone

I'm curious what options there are. I was interested in Spanish and found one place but just checked and they only offer English/Spanish https://cclsnj.edu/spanish-course

Might be useful to combine an online course with a language exchange. I was thinking about just taking courses through italki as its a more 1 on 1 thing, but if it was something local that would be nice.
