I’m flying from Melbourne, Australia to Barcelona, Spain on December 23 for work, and I stop by in transit in Newark from 4:25pm to 7:15pm on the Friday. With 2 hours and 50 minutes to spare, is it possible for me to get out of the airport and go get a good view of the Statue of Liberty before heading back and catching my flight comfortably?

I was thinking of catching an Uber from the airport to Liberty State Park, which seems to take 15 minutes according to Maps, but I’m unsure as to how traffic will affect that time and what the cost of that Uber will be.

If you guys don’t think I can make it, what are some other things to do in the little time I have in Newark that you guys would recommend.

Considering you’re going to have to go through customs you probably wont have any time to leave the airport.

Not worth the risk on a Friday during rush hour in the winter just before x-mas.

I'd wouldn't recommend leaving the airport with only 2.5 hours to spare. The traffic at rush hour would eat up most of your time and going through security (with or without tsa pre-check) could take another half hour or more.

If you are a dare Devil like me… check in online because I always do with jet blue .. but anyway check in before hand for that specific layover flight … and I actually do recommend catching Uber from EWR to liberty state park or light rail into penn station and catch path train to exchange place and see the 🗽from a 5 mile radius … but I had lay overs especially now where if it 7:15 at times pilots and etc weren’t ready until 8:30 and you have more than enough time. We did a whole 🗽 tour within an hour it was fast and I enjoyed it.. I have some dope pictures too

2 hours and 50 minutes isn't enough time to do anything outside the airport, especially if you're traveling international. It's tempting, but everything will take longer than you expect, especially if you're not familiar with the area.

Honestly I would stay in the airport. That’s not much time.

No. Newark airport to Jersey city is 40 minutes alone - that doesn’t include waiting for anything.

Coming back into the airport you’ll have to go through tsa - which can also take 40 minutes (I’ve gone through it in 15 minutes and I’ve gone through it in 45).

In northern nj 15 miles = 45 minute drive. And maybe at 3am on Tuesday, an Uber can make it to JC in 15 minutes- but not normally.

Not on Friday, and definitely not on 12/23. Wait at the airport and explore the different YouTube videos on it.

2.5 international layover?

I'd stay in the terminal and take up plane spotting.

No. A 2.5 hour layover is really a 1.5 hour layover considering international flights board 1 hour before the scheduled departure.

Liberty State Park would be the best view for the statue and that would be a 30-40 ride in Friday rush hour traffic. That's 1 hour and 20 minute round trip. Once you get back to the airport, you then have to go through security again, at Newark Airport, on a Friday when everyone want to get out of town for the weekend.

There's no chance you can make it to the statue and back in time.
