Even after NJ became a free state a lot of people supported slavery. Newark produced a lot of goods that benefited from it. They made leather goods like saddles that the south bought, and I think they processed fabric made from cotton, so they still benefited from the labor. I forget exactly the details, but I remember reading something about protests to the war when they began recruitment.

Which is why I laughed when some people make comments about "proper" English. Like, ...go back 300 years and try to have a conversation with an English speaker. They'd be about as effective a highschooler who took one year of Spanish.
