If you can, get ahold of the latest Beatles documentary "Get Back" and watch how Paul McCartney and John Lennon wrote a song. There's so much trial and error. Even if they don't have lyrics, they substitute other words until they find something that rhymes/makes sense/fits the space.

mm ye i watched that it was very good, i think at the time i wasnt really focused on the songwriting aspect of it
