My gf hangs out with this girl who really likes K-pop. I guess I’m kind of a snob (avant-garde, jazz, rock) but im trying to be nice and find something I can enjoy or relate to but it feels like a marketing scheme designed to make girls feel insecure about their image so they can pay artist to tell them they are loved. Is there any K pop that actually pushes the boundaries of their genre’s musicianship or shows a meaningful artistic struggle?

That's a weird oxymoron You can always try looking for korean bands in general and not a genre you're not a fan of.

More or less just trying to contribute to the conversation. I believe any genre could be progressive or creative. Take Jack Stauber for instance. Not a fan of pop music but he is genuinely creative.

134340 by BTS. Also, try Xdinary Heroes for some light rock (they actually play instruments). Stray Kids has some good songs that are not your typical "happy dance," like Lonely St. or Red Lights. Red Velvet uses some classical music samples and interesting vocal arrangements in songs like Psycho or Feel My Rhythm.

Despite popular belief, you can find tons of songs with really high levels of sound production, from the samples to the genres they combine and experiment with to the weird tempo/key changes.

PS: if you want a cool rock cover of Britney Spears, look for Royal Pirates' take on Circus.

All that being said, if you don't enjoy the genre it's gonna be tough. Like finding good reggae songs for those who love tango.

My son got into it a while ago. Black Pink was played over and over by him.

My background is 1980s & 1990s punk and hip hop.

Honestly, I know they are super mainstream, but it grew on me. High energy music. So weird.
