For funky fusion jazz, I’d highly recommend: Roy Ayers, Bobby Hutchinson, Freddie Hubbards CTI albums, Eddie Harris, Herbie Hancocks 70s period was amazing too. The Meters, Earth Wind & Fire, Ramsey Lewis, Donald Byrd and the Blackbyrds.

Also Brazil put out amazing funk/fusion jazz artists in the 70s: Marku Ribas, Tim Maia, Marcos Valle, Toni Tornado etc.

That’s all I got for now. But there’s so much more.

This is probably pushing a bit too close to the pop line, but Dirty Loops have a few albums with some incredibly dope bass and kit playing on them. Def super groovy and they do employ a bit of jazz harmony since they're all jazz school grads, but like I said they mix it in with a pop veneer on top.

Thrust by Herbie Hancock is my favorite from his 70's funk era, much credit owed to his badass rhythm section (Paul Jackson on bass and Mike Clark on drums). The deep grooves on that album are ludicrous. Yes Headhunters is an absolute classic but Thrust is the one that really turned me on to funk/jazz fusion. Apparently the entire thing was only recorded in a few takes which is amazing though not all that surprising.
