20yrs as a Music Artist? 10yrs? 5yrs? 1yr? Many fans,or little fans? Lots of money or little money? Good music is all about the creativity of the creator of it and the audience that relates with it. What should SUCCESS in the music industry mean?

Always check the early life on wiki. Most times the parents'names are blue. It helps to have family in the industry.

Dogged determinism, who you know, and blind luck are the general things that tend to lead to "success" in the industry.
Unfortunately talent and originality aren't necessarily required.
So personal success, satisfaction in one's own work, becomes much more important since the chances of "making it big" are slim no matter how good an artist you might be.

Spot on!
Some of the most technically able performers, with the most unconventional ideas, are also the dullest for audiences. But they keep plugging away in tiny venues, rather than "sell out" for commercial success. Personally, I'm trying to blend both approaches: college trained but with the spirit of punk and grunge.

Financial success is mostly about who you know and how marketable you are. There are a million musicians capable of making a catchy 2.5 minute long slapper people will download.

We live in a time of Industry Plants. 80% of all music thats considered popular today is performed by people who have no business in the music industry. The artists today come with lots of extras like sex videos, Having completely clueless opinions on topics, drama over rival performers and an unquenchable appetite for fame. Music was more honest when talent was required just to step into a recording studio.

It means that it's going to be riddled with enough clichés that I'll find it boring.
