Didn’t they damn near invent or popularize the Post-Hardcore genre. Alternative/Indie technically fits the bill, like you said, but it’s a little deceiving in the way we categorize those genres now

They pretty much invented the DIY punk scene and the Emo and Straight Edge sub-cultures then later the post-core genre.
