It pains me to say it, but I've outgrown the Red Hot Chili Peppers and think they really suck now

The Red Hot Chili Peppers suck now, and I wish people listened to their old stuff more because it’s so much better. Prior to Blood Sugar Sex Magik, I was heavily into RHCP. First Freaky Styley, then Uplift Mofo Party Plan then Mother’s Milk...Three solid records. The band was fun, and dumb and I was young.

But I still try to listen to their new stuff. They had an album that just came out Dream Canteen something something. Spotify brought it to my attention -"Hey! Hey you! try this new album! We think you'll like it!" I listened to it, and it was just...lazy.

Sample lyrics from the very first song:

Well, I'm an animal

Somethin' like a cannibal

I'm very flammable

And partially programmable!

I felt like maybe one of Flea's kids wrote this at like 9 years old or something? I was just embarrassed for them. Then they had a song called Eddie about Eddie Van Halen and it was like they read Van Halen's wikipedia page.

oh...I guess I played a Flying V.

Then a lifeless, pointless Frusciante guitar solo. Some of his laziest work.

Kiedis stopped rapping as much but his voice is mediocre with little range. His lyrics are bush league. Flea still slaps his bass guitars, apparently not having outgrown it.

And there is great new music being made nowadays (I loved Turnstiles "GLOW ON" for example) so it's not just a case of me getting older.

Sadly, RHCP sucks now.

Yeah not really deep lyrically, wasn't a major fan and wouldn't shell out money for a ticket but they did have a few good grooves they milked the shit out of

I agree 100%. I will always have a soft spot for their early stuff (84-91) as I grew up listening to it, but everything I’ve heard from them since has been pretty awful. The last album from them I listened to in it’s entirety was ‘Stadium Arcadium’ and I absolutely hated it.

Up to One Hot Minute was great, BSSM is one of the best albums ever. It started going downhill at Californication and they were awful for 25 years.

But I really do love the album they released at the start of this year, Unlimited Love. It has a more early 90's feel to it. John is back, Flea & Chad are tight and Anthony is....Anthony. His singing always sucked and his lyrics are pretty awful but on that album he does a bit more of his rapping thing and it sounds so much better than the previous 25 years of shit.

Not loving the newest album though. But we don't have to like everything every band releases. Just listen to the stuff you love.

Still really love them, however, as a fifty-something, I totally see how Nirvana and Sonic Youth were overrated. Sounds like a bunch of noise now and I use to love them. #oldlady

I still have Sonic Youth on my rotation and their best moments are still really sublime. While some of it sounds like noise, take Tunic (song for Karen) and tell me that isn't still great?

Well, I don't know, maybe I expected some virtuosity, maybe an homage to an Van Halen solo, something. It was just like a solo that he played and held certain notes. Not very interesting in my book, and yes, lazy.

Well I still love the other bands of my youth like Bad Brains, Fugazi, Janes Addiction. But then again, none of them are still trying to put out new music.

I did hear the latest album from a band called "Goose" and I gotta say that was pretty great.

Did you listen to the whole album? Carry Me Home, Fake As Fuck, Bella, Reach Out, My Cigarette, Roulette, The Drummer….so many masterpieces on it. I love the use of sax. I completely disagree with your take.

I mean, lots of rock singers have sung really well into and past their 60’s. Jagger, Bowie, Tyler, Young. Kurdish couldn’t sing before this age but he rapped more so I guess that hid his awful voice.

To each their own I guess, my apologies for coming across confrontational. Jazz music does nothing for me, although my experience with it is slim and John's my favorite guitar player so I must defend my boy! What is a Jazz band you recommend I check out to help expand my horizons?

Hot Take? Josh > John for 2010 - 2020’s RHCP.

I really liked the balance of what he brought to the table for a more mature feeling to their albums. I still don’t like how they just cast him aside for what seems like a failed attempt at capturing the old magic.

No worries man, it took me many years to appreciate jazz.

A great place to start is the album “Kind of Blue” by Miles Davis. I tend to like the bebop piano style so pianists like Oscar Peterson, Red Garland, Benny Green, and Dave Brubeck are up my alley. Then you get to denser stuff like Thelonius Monk and Chick Corea, that’s pretty advanced jazz.

And that’s ok if it’s not up your alley, like I said it took for me playing it and really trying to learn jazz piano that got me into it.

RHCP is a fun party band. If you want lyrical depth (beyond sex, drugs, and rock and roll), you'll have to find it somewhere else.
