I don't mean that the lyrics are sad over some upbeat banjo tune. I mean that the melody and tone is devastatingly sad, makes you feel lonely or depressed. The kind of thing that would make you cry on the right occasion or tear up in a movie theater. Songs that make your heart ache over your breakup.

Preferably not death metal or rock.

Some that come to mind.

Agony - Yung Lean
Apocalypse - Cigarettes after Sex
Dawn Chorus - Thom York
Sarah - Alex G
Dontworryaboutme - killed myself
Forth of July - Sufjan
Anything by Frank
keep it together - jake
It's ok you're ok - Bonjr

I’ve seen a good amount of Radiohead on here, but want to add Videotape, that song kills me.

Also second About Today by The National, that one will tear you up.

Alter Bridge - In Loving Memory …

My best friend and brother from another mother died in a motorcycle accident on August 19th 2007.. just so happens that he was riding my motorcycle at the time.

We lived together, we would frequently drink Maddog 20/20 and get completely obliterated. We would use this time to take turns picking songs and trying to stump the other person with something new.

One night, we came across this song. We loved each other and frequently spoke about old age and smoking cigars together. However, we were realistic about our lifestyles and so we made a decision.

Whoever went first would make sure that this song was played at the others funeral.

This song was played at both his University wide memorial and his funeral. I love it so much, but it devastates me every time I hear it.

RIP AFF Jr. - you are sorely missed. No words of mine can express the sadness I feel every time I realize that you’re not here with me today; to see my son grow up, and to grow old with me. I love you still and the deepest parts of my soul cry out with remorse every single day. I love you bro.

I’ve had a conversation with a few friends about “I just don’t think I’ll ever get over you”. While they’ve heard it as a breakup song, I’ve always heard it as a mourning song over the death of a partner. It’s a pretty powerful one regardless.

It could be seen that way. I feel like the references to being asked to dinner and feeling the touch of love again pushes it in the romantic direction but could totally be seen as an unspecified loss. He's made a couple comments here and there in live performances but dont think anything for sure cementing it. Def a heavy one and a feeling I think most people still feeling the fresh wounds can attest to.
