How many styles of music do you like/understand outside of your area? and time?

Would your great grandmother understand or like your music? Would someone else;s great grandmother on the other side of the world like your music? no. its not universal

I'd say that musical styles aren't universal, but the idea of music itself is. Pretty much every single society on earth has some form of singing or instruments.

Except music does transcend region, language and generations, when my great grandparents were alive they liked plenty of contemporary things and new generations like things going back, there's often waves of popularity of music from other countries (the boom of k-pop with western audiences for example)

No one will like every piece of music made but we all love music.

You’re right but this is a general sub and you’re gonna get a lot of dead brains here. Music is part of culture and cultural context is different everywhere, and if you hear something from a foreign culture that sounds familiar its because it’s been directly influenced by your culture or you’re misinformed by your cultural context.

I mean I probably would enjoy it. I listen to a ton of things. I feel I understand what you are trying to argue with cultural over universal. If it sounds nice what’s to stop you from enjoying it? I don’t need to understand German or Italian to enjoy some of my favorite songs or even French.

Culture does play heavily into what you’re exposed to as well as what kind of area you’re in. Once you have the means to explore though you can easily branch out to new things. Easier said than done for specific areas again.

I’m gonna look into what you recommended though, not to be salty I just feel I can find some bangers for while I’m at work.

Interesting. The oldest members of my family (60s) listen to SOAD, Eminem, Muse etc, while the youngest in my family (19) listens to classical music, and has a particular interest in old sea shanties. My mother died about 10 years ago in her 70s, and she was still listening regularly to the latest pop music. At 60, I love mainly alt rock, grunge & electronic, but also African music like African Head Charge. It might be just my family, but I think music is pretty universal
