Originally long hair in rock music was a sign of rebellion, but then it became something common. The reaction to rockstars cutting their hair was almost the same: "they turned away from rock", "they're not cool anymore", "they went pop", "they're boooring" or something like that.
I wonder if hair length still matters? Do people still have strong reactions to musicians cutting their hair? Sure people are more acceptable of short hair these days, fans tend to focus on the music instead of the appearance, but there might be those who miss the long hair.

Easier to look the part with long hair...
There are a lot of balding rock stars holding onto their long hair. And fans incessantly troll them.
Looks matter.
