This is an awesome list, im working through it now. I love metal, i just havent embraced metal core. The problem is, I keep listening to classic metal like Sabbath, which I love, I just want to see what else is going on out there.
Well there's plenty of fantastic metal out there. Some heavier than others. I don't really follow any metal that sounds like the classic 70s-80s metal so I don't have any suggestions there but if you like heavy stuff

Glad you like them. I have only listed groups that are good both live and have great recorded music.
Your critique of nu-metal is bit harsh. Since ne metal is just the mixture of rock hip-hop industrial and metal . Bands like limp bizkit Korn Linkin park, otep, deftones flyleaf slipknot evanescence and many more considered nu metal. But it might not be your style.
So back to your question. It really depends on how hard you want it. How much screaming.
If you like it really hard. May I suggest five finger death punch, in this moment halestorm. Who have powerful ballads and really hard metal songs
If you're looking for something more old school rock, may I suggest Greta van fleet. Who gives off led zeppelin vibes.
There are so many good rock bands out there that no one ever hears of due to corporate radio. I would suggest looking on alternative charts. That's where you're going to find new bands that sounds like they are out of the 70s and 80s.
Hey , thanks for the reply. My thoughts got lost on me. I actually like nu metal, especially LP, LB. I meant Metal core. It's the ineligible screaming, that i cant get the groove with. I dig all old metal, sabbath, metallica, slayer etc, but it seems the bands that are getting the most traction in the market are harder core metal, because fans like it. Trying to see what the middle rock ground is. Halestorm is good, but I dont love. Ah yeah, I never really got into Greta Van Fleet, I will check them out. I know the dude can sing.
Not sure which metalcore bands you’ve listened to, but I like the genre but stay away from the heavier/mostly screamed stuff. I like a lot of the melodic stuff. Some of the bands I enjoy in that vein are: Issues (2nd and 3rd albums to avoid screaming), The Word Alive, Pierce The Veil, Point North, Hands Like Houses, Bring Me The Horizon (any album after Sempiternal), and A Day To Remember.
Honestly though you could just start with that last band. If you don’t like them, I understand that you just don’t like the genre.

I saw your comment specifying that you do like the nu metal genre. I think you'll like Don Broco, they're kinda what I would consider a more current take on nu metal I guess lol, they're kinda hard to pin down though. Super underrated band imo, especially their latest two albums!

Wet Leg is definitely growing in popularity. They recently performed at the Grammy’s and the Brit Awards. They are a fun listen if you like indie/alt rock.
Im not sure they are for me tbh, but yeah, getting huge traction which is great for them.
Halestorm just released a new album last year.
Seen them twice and they’re incredible. They are probably some of the hardest working rock musicians today

I don’t think they’re touring at the moment but I know they did a North American tour and a European tour last year and they tour quite a lot so I’m sure you’ll get a chance to see them soon. If I can recommend an album, it’s their second album but The Strange Case Of… is phenomenal

Muse. They have a new album called Will Of The People.
Clutch - They've been around for 30 years but, they are still comprised of the original members, still put out a new album every couple of years and are still one of the most bad ass live acts on the road.
I have never really gotten into clutch much, but I heard they were incredible live. Xray Visions is a great song. I dont know why, but they never really stick in my head.

Yeah ticket prices are out of this world. You are right.. Tool is old like I am. Just know my 20-something niece and her friends love them now.

Im in a band and on a quest to write the cool stuff thats in my head, but it doesnt come out right. I want to hear what is new and hitting because all my influences are old. Im looking for a new twist on my tastes and die trying.
So the big, young jam band group is Goose. I have seen them twice in concert and they are amazing. Their New Year's Eve show is on YouTube and is a good one. They release almost all their shows for free and high quality on YouTube or the Bandcamp app. Albums are all on Spotify, but jam bands are best experienced live.
Dogs in a Pile, Magic Beans, Spafford Pigeons Playing Ping Pong is from my hometown and recently played two sold-out shows at the 9:30 Club in DC. I just saw Papadosio live for the first time. They are trance-jam with a big electronic component. I really love them, but clearly not for everyone. Ghost Light. Wow. They are a fantastic up-and-coming jam band. I am excited to see them this summer at a huge music festival.

Ghost are really popular they are similar to late 70s/80s heavy metal
If you are into heavy metal I can recommend you look into Satan and Riot city but they are not that popular.

Spiritbox has been gaining a lot of popularity the last couple years. My favorites from them are secret garden, constance, and eternal blue. They also have a nice selection of heavier stuff if you're into that, like rotoscope, holy roller, and yellow jacket.

Thank You Scientist - prog rock with a horn section, some metal elements, catchy hooks and all clean vocals. IMHO, they are the best rock band to have come out since the 90’s.
A few others that I love:

Alexisonfire (post-hardcore)
Rise Against (punk - earlier stuff, melodic hardcore)
Cam Cole (blues-rock, one man band)
God Is An Astronaut (post-rock, no vocals)
Prog gives makes my blood pump in 7/8 time. Keeps me on edge. alexisonefire and Cam Cole are amazing!

Badflower- a newer band that has only been around since the mid-late 2010s and have blossomed (pun intended) in popularity thanks to being spotlighted on SiriusXM's Octane station. They're not super heavy, but they're still very good. A lot of their songs are about mental health and can be emotional at times. They only have 2 albums out so they have a pretty easy discography to get into.
Fever 333- another newer band. These guys are INCREDIBLE live performers. I first saw them at a festival where I didn't know what to expect and they really set the standard and brought down the house for being the first band of the day. They've only gotten bigger and better since. If you like Rage Against the Machine, definitely check them out. They're kind of like a modern day version of Rage and you can hear Tom and Zach's influence in their songs.
My Morning Jacket- these guys have been around for a while now, but they're still very modern. They kind of have a psychedelic rock/jam band sound that's very popular with the Bonnaroo crowd. Their whole discography is pretty great and they experiment with a lot of new sounds. The song "Touch Me, I'm Going to Scream pt 2" is incredible and basically an acid trip through music. If you listen to nothing else by them, at least listen to that song.
I Prevail- this is a metalcore band that I've followed since the beginning of their career. They blew up with their cover of Taylor Swift's "Blank Space" and have released solid songs/albums ever since. They have 2 vocalists, one for "normal" singing and one for screaming/growling. Some of their songs have a rap element to them in the same vein as Linkin Park. I'd say they're pretty digestible for people who don't normally like metal. They've only released 3 albums so far, with the 2nd album being my personal favorite.
The Glorious Sons- these guys kind of have a southern rock vibe, even though they're a Canadian band. They got massive airplay on rock radio with their single "Sawed Off Shotgun", an upbeat song that constrasts with the dark message of the lyrics. They formed in the mid 2010s and have been on the rise ever since with each album charting higher than the previous one. They're definitely "one to watch" moving into the future.

I like metal, almost all of it, but metal core. The charts and press seem to favour things i dont like and the most successful commercial bands are all 70+.
There have been some awesome suggestions here. I usually discover new bands by listening to Spotify Radio on the a band I like.

Rock music is taking a nap these days. Nobody wants to grow up to be a rock star anymore. :( I'm coming to the conclusion that rock may be on the way out. A 70 year fad that has about run it's course. Tool and Pucifer and the only recent talent I care for.
The blues music scene is doing good. Bad times tends to breed good blues.
Yeah, Tool sold tickets in London for £125 a seat. Since then I am committed to local venues only.

Older audiences only listen to older bands and younger audiences dont want rock....yet....;-)
I don't think you're looking in the right places, rock music is booming at the moment. King Gizzard, BCNR, black midi, IDLES, Slift, Shame, Fontaines D.C. I could genuinely go on and on, theres a miriad of bands out at the moment that are pushing rock forward and bringing it to new audiences. It's not mainstream the way it once was but it's certainly not a fad.

Metalcore has been the most successful rock genre recently. Prog is doing good underground though. Check out Haken, Vola, Leprous, Reliqa, and Caligula's Horse, just to name a few
