Apricot by LAZYDESIGNERS, built with U4T and MA Industry. I'm coming from a BM43A as my daily driver. I'm still learning to navigate combos and tapdances to master the QAZ layout, but as of now it all seems to work perfectly, autoshift also helps a lot.

This might be a stupid question, but how do you use it when so many letters are missing? Like A, P, Q and Z? Do you have a job where you donโ€™t need them? Or are they programmed differently?

araset OP t1_j1uetcc wrote

They are not missing, not all the keys do the same thing written on them. The X novelty is q, but when pressed in combo with w it becomes esc. Same thing for meta + o, which becomes backspace.

Once you get used to the layout and combos it becomes second nature.

You guys always kill me because it's like you come up with a funny idea for a keyboard meme product and then someone spends actual effort mocking it up or making a CAD model and then someone decides to actually make it and you spend real money on it because nobody had the sense to just say "this is actually stupid" somewhere along the way

Beautiful apricot btw lol

Came hear to say the same thing. I get a chuckle out of some of the keyboards on this subreddit but this one damn near killed me. Sure, this is compact and aesthetically pleasing but if I'm going to need a user's manual on my desk to find my space bar, it's kind of deal breaker.

araset OP t1_j1usfpc wrote

I mean technically you are the one writing the user manual, as with all the custom boards you can decide how you want the keys function since VIA is your friend. It's all a matter of getting used to to your own configuration. I still average 100 wpm on this board

Ooh I love it! I really, really need to build me one of these sub-40s boards.

Perfect to go with a Steam Deck IMO

Where did you get that cable? Zapcables had unsleeved ones like that but they're gone now.

araset OP t1_j1veio7 wrote

It's a functionality integrated in VIA and QMK, you just have to set it up. This board comes pre flashed from the creator (the guy is great) with the firmware needed to make it effective and you can set combos up directly in the keyboard configurator. For my combos I took inspiration from others in the 40s community.

Nobody forces you to use one. Iโ€™m using a 40, a 1800 and an hhkb and I like all of them :) I think itโ€™s awesome that through communities things like this can come to life, because it brings joy. Also, Iโ€™d love to just say that road cars with engines bigger than 1.4L are stupid, but apparently there are people that enjoy them and nobody asked :)

FrescaPantalones t1_j1vm54s wrote

Very nice. Makes me wish I bought the HHKB version instead of the no-blocker version.

Am I crazy or does the S look upside down even though itโ€™s not?

araset OP t1_j1vwuqs wrote

Oh, I see.. I don't have a XDA set to compare them to, also I never used neither before, anyway I like them but wouldn't like to confuse people by giving wrong infos

I learned the hard way. I bought the Heavy Industry "MA" and loved the profile (and basically everything about that set). Then I bought some other MAs and was like "what gives" after those arrived, as the newer MA sets were noticeably taller?

Since then, I've been exclusively buying XDA caps...

The 40% keyboard Discord exists, I don't know if I'm allowed to link it here. Lots of people willing to help willing to share keymaps and configurations, if you want I can share the invite in PM.

I love that Rama has taken so long to get their product out the door that clone sets are already in customer hands. Might have to cancel my order and grab a set of these, at least they'll actually show up.

I actually do, I regularly use Excel as well as other software requiring extensive use of the F-row and also frequently have to type e-mails. I know for sure some people are using the same layout for programming.

This should be a great traveling keyboard I recon.

Well done on the build and great choice of keycaps.
