This shouldn't significantly affect the function of the switch once mostly cleaned off though. Also the worst case scenario is you have to chuck a switch worth at at most a a few ten cent coins instead of a motherboard and CPU potentially worth over $1,000.

You got it wrong. You don't put any thermalnpaste between cooler and cpu because they are perfectly flat.
