And the money the district has to spend to defend this nonsense will take away dollars from educating its vulnerable public school children. Congratulations again to the party of "family values" for demonstrating its disregard for actual children (after they are embryos, of course).

Augusta should look at passing laws to protect LGBTQ students more. The asshole right is gonna try to poke holes in laws, we got to do better.

laws to protect them from grooming?
HumpSlackWails t1_j7ywcc5 wrote
Unfortunately we can't make laws to keep children away from just men - with men being the overwhelming perpetrators of child sex abuse regardless of the gender of the child. And sex crimes in general, actually.
And violent crime.
And we can't really ban children from churches... I don't think. Maybe there's a way though.

Somebody should report Adam Shelton for the unauthorized practice of law in Maine. I did a google search and he’s not licensed here.

They haven’t filed a lawsuit yet.

I don’t think it matters, he’s representing someone in Maine while not being licensed here

Maybe parents should be closer with their kids x…

I suspect the mom has some pretty heavy beliefs and the child is not comfortable coming out or talking to her mom. So the child reached out to someone they could trust. The chest piece might of been too far, but that's all I can think of how it got here.
DidDunMegasploded t1_j7i8acn wrote
But of course. If kids can't reach out to their parents about LGBTQ+ matters, they only have a select few avenues that aren't online--teachers, a therapist if they're seeing one, or their friends, to name a few. Depends on the person, of course, but all three groups have a far higher chance of being understanding if a student comes out as gay/transgender/etc. than a parent would.

The school is passing out chest binders to children? Do they just have them on hand for the random trans student? That sounds off to me. This is more than no communication between parents and the school. This sounds like the child doesn't communicate with their parents, either. I hope the kid is ok. ❤🌈
tobascodagama t1_j7m7bvt wrote
They're not, is the thing. Schools passing out chest binders is as real as the "litter boxes for furries" thing.
78FANGIRL t1_j7m98og wrote
That was the point of my comment. No one just has a chest binder in case someone at the school comes out and asks for one. The kid bought one or a sports bra.
HumpSlackWails t1_j7ywj3k wrote
IF the child isn't communicating there's probably a reason. Like safety or acceptance concerns.
Also I doubt they have them on hand or that there was only one interaction. We should probably ask this child why they didn't go to their parents and why they had to seek safety and help elsewhere.

go ahead and sue!!! what they are asking for is way beyond reasonable no judge in their right mind would even consider the case.

Another day, another truncated headline from /u/yzfmike. Why do you post them like that? Are you a broken bot?
HumpSlackWails t1_j7yw76l wrote
Well, I think its clear why the child wasn't going to her parents with these identity issues.
And this is exactly why laws forcing disclosure are bad. These laws are about the PARENTS not the CHILD. They don't protect kids. If the kids aren't talking to those closest to them about these kinds of critical issues...
Try asking the kid why not. Then value their answer.
Earthling1a t1_j7h5uiv wrote
Schools are obligated to protect kids from abusive parents. This qualifies.
