I got this very scammy postcard thing in the mail from Smart Energy thanking me for being a Central Maine customer and offering me a $200 gift card I just don't understand how these people get this information I don't do anything sketchy online I don't understand how they get my name my address and it just really is pissing me off because there's people who would fall for this because it all looks very official

they are just sending you mail. your name and address are basically public domain, it's not like they're mailing you with your last balance due and SS#...are they?

Ya I'm convinced fidium or one of their partner companies sold my data right away. My email box exploded and i started to get 5 or 6 calls a day from random numbers. This is before i even had the service, just signed up and made an appt.

It’s the same as any other junk mail. You’re on one or more mailing lists.

Once they have your address it’s easy to know you live in CMP territory.

The short answer is that this company likely bought a database of all residents in various CMP service areas. The reason I believe that is true is because our solicitation from those same people came in my wife's name. The electric service is in my name.

So here's something to think about. I used to live in a house with Versant power in my dad's name. I then moved to a place with CMP power. My parents still owned the place with Versant, though, so to help them out I kept paying the power bill there, but left it in my dad's name. So now I'm at a house in CMP's service area, paying a bill for Versant. And I'm getting flyers that are in my dad's name saying "Versant customer". The ONLY way they could have gotten that info is if Versant themselves sold it to them.

Yes, I agree. They bought a database of customers from Versant, no doubt. I imagine those lists are more expensive than just buying a list of resident names in any given area. Target your audience or spam them is the choice depending on how much you want to spend on advertising I guess.

Yeah that's the same thing that happened with us it came in my name but the electricity bill is in my husband's name

Various energy companies know people are upset about high electric bills and will send customers this shit trying to convince them they will SAVE SAVE SAVE!!!

ALL of these companies are in businesd to make money (just like CMP) and not for altruistic reasons. Just chick it in the trash with the rest of your junk mail.

No I just figured I'd ask cuz it's like the fifth time I've received the same piece of mail I really just rip it up and throw it away that's that the same as any other junk mail but like five times really
