And the train hit his car so hard it "pushed into the restaurant’s parking lot, where it collided with three other vehicles that were parked", but he was still allowed by emt's to drive it to the hospital?

Possible suicide attempt, maybe? Although death by incoming train seems like an unconventional way to go.

Drivers always seem happy to stop on the tracks so it doesn’t surprise me that someone would just drive around the gates and ignore the lights and bells.
A lot of people really believe the train will stop for them, the main character of reality.

If you are conscious you can refuse EMTs, regardless of severity of injury. You could be bleeding out and all your limbs chopped off, if you refuse they can't help you. They however will do their best to have you reconsider your decision. If you are unconscious they can help you as implied consent in the matter, where any reasonable person would consent. The police though would be able to stop the car from being driven, hah. Maybe police wasn't on scene yet? Weird story in any case

This happens in this spot every couple of years. I used to live in that neighborhood.

this is factually inaccurate. Maine EMS protocol avail on line, specifically the "Brown 4 / page 11" addresses this.

Yeah, more people are inclined to believe this was an accident, but I dunno...reading the article screams "suicide" or "intention of harming himself" to me.

Don't the trains move pretty slowly through the Allen Ave crossing? If he wanted to off himself you'd think he'd find a crossing with an Amtrak keeping speed through it.

Perhaps. But the article screams either "suicide" or "intent to harm himself" to me. Very fishy.

The Amtrak passenger trains seem to have a higher speed limit than freight trains do. I've noticed that difference at the Brighton Ave crossing near Punky's. It seems likely they'd have about the same speed since those crossings aren't that far from each other and have similar curves nearby. Maybe 20-25 MPH vs 10-15.
Downeaster service isn't that new, but if someone has a lifetime habit of cutting in front of freight trains they'll be in real trouble trying to beat the passenger ones.

A coworker of mine said she knows the guy. She heard from another person on the scene that he was out at Bruno's with his boss. Thought he could get through even after the arms were down. She did not seem surprised he would attempt that.

Am I reading this right? Driver is unidentified? Drove himself to the hospital? In what car?? Does this seem fishy to anybody else?
