I am from away but have a great admiration for the wonderful local culture of Maine. Despite being here for several years now, I am not sure I have had the pleasure of sampling a distinctive red snapper hot dog. I had hoped to remedy this, but at the store I only found these dogs from Massachusetts. They are red, certainly, but are they the same as a true Maine red snapper? Or are these but a lesser imitation?

I think the ones made in Maine are from W.A. Bean and Sons, in Bangor.

Can't tell you about the Kayem red hot dogs, probably the same as the regular Kayem but dyed red.

Kayem are good. Jordans too. If it's grilled and red it's good. Just make sure the skin splits before serving. If not done enough you will bite it and drag the meat out leaving an uncircumcised Weiner in your bun.

Work in a pinch if you can’t find Jordans

They are fine but there are plenty made in maine. Maine family farms, shields, bean and sons.

I do find the Kayem to be even more salty tasting than the WA Bean or the Jordan, but in the end it's still a sodium loaded meat tube so it's probably personal preference.

If you ever travel around Lewiston, try Simones' Hot Dog Stand...it's Red Snapper Paridise, .and the standard that others are judged

Jordan's are the gold (red) standard, but Kayem's will do in a pinch. Be sure to wash 'em down with a nice bowl of grape nut ice cream afterwards.

They are pretty good when eaten in moderation. Two of them make a perfect meal but if you go for a third they start to taste weird for some reason.

Depending where you are in Maine there are also Shields red dogs. Mostly in York County. 👍👍🌭

Off topic but did you all know Shaws doesn’t sell red hotdogs? Yet another reason to hate them

F these people who even make you THINK you need to type "i'm from away"

Yes, they are acceptable dogs. PRO TIP: Nobody who should mean anything to you will know or care once they are cooked.

Ha, thank you, but don't worry - no one has actually made me feel unwelcome or anything like that. I just wanted to explain why I needed to ask (and I want the "authentic" experience). I also periodically buy and drink a 12-pack of Moxie, even though half the locals hate it. Gosh, I'm sounding like that one copypasta (https://www.reddit.com/r/copypasta/comments/9wzugd/american_weeb/)

Where are Jordan's made these days? Certainly not in the Hampton Inn parking lot like they used to...

No. The official (Maine) red hot dog is Jordan's. Hannaford brand is the only alternative. All the others may be red and shaped like hot dogs but, if you grew-up eating red hot dogs, in Maine, they were probably Jordan's and any imitator will be a disappointment.

Kayem dogs are great. I sell them on my hotdog stand. Try the red ones for the novelty if you want, but after that stick with the brown dogs. All you are getting is the unnecessary red dye.

Red hot dogs...what are you people, 8 years old?

Evaluate the quality of ingredients and flavor profile. They can look like a turd for all I care, I eat with my mouth.

Kayem is good. The best way to cook a red snapper is over a camp fire on a wooden stick until the skin has split. Onions are a common topping along with relish and all the normal fixings.

Jordan's is the OG Lewiston Lobster but Maine Family Farms makes a better one, I think.
