They also have a nice coffee shop with baked goods across the common next to the market.

https://www.thepourfarm.com/ Nice little brewery with various events, check the website schedule.

AFAIK, no public hiking trails in Union but nice hikes just down Rt.17 in Hope and West Rockport-

The old dam site is interesting to check out but only 1/4 mile of hiking- https://www.georgesriver.org/pool-preserve/

Come back in the summer when you can play on the various ponds and the river.

Parents live town over in Appleton. If you have never driven on Appleton ridge I highly encourage it, it's really beautiful up there.

If you want to go hiking I would suggest maiden's cliff. It over looks megunticook lake on one side and all of Camden / the ocean on the other.

Speaking of camden, it's a nice lil quaint town with shops in stuff. If you like tacos I highly suggest visiting the jack. I grew up with the head chef his street tacos are really good.

If you want to see a lighthouse I would suggest walking the breakwater in Rockport. It's about a mile long walk out into the ocean, so I wouldn't suggest it on a windy day.

Feel free to DM me any questions, and I hope you enjoy your time in the Midcoast area!

The old damn site is harder to get to in the winter since there is no real public access on that side of the river where the remnants of the mill are and requires a short hike in across private property.

I would recommend the public house on the common for food as well as the bakehouse for some coffee and baked goods.

Would also recommend the pour farm for a couple drafts and sweetgrass distillery for their tasting room and spirits.

You could see if mathew’s museum is open while you are there but I am not sure about this time of year. Small local agricultural museum located on the fairgrounds.

As for drives, Union is basically a river valley with fours lakes all situated between three mountain ridges. The river meanders through town and around the fair grounds. All three of those ridges have some scenic views and are quick interesting drives.

Not terribly far and a great hike for views on a clear day is Hogback Mountain in Montville.

Also Morse's and Old Alewives in Waldoboro

A little out of the way but still in the region is Sheepscot General Store which is awesome!

Sterlingtown has a good burger and mushroom appetizer. It’s kinda pricey for what it is though. Not many options for non meat eaters- yes they have a rice bowl, but $18 for a bowl of rice and veggies and then to pay extra for tofu? Sorry.

Appleton has a new restaurant called Fōda which I have not been to yet, but have heard generally good things about.

Sweetgrass Distillery has a good low cost tasting thing you can do. I think it’s like $5. It’s fun if you like booze. They have a bunch of cordials as well, so the tasting is interesting.

You will be close to Rockland/Camden and all they have to offer. Also the Washington Store in, well, Washington has really good food.

The town clubhouse is the Pour Farm though, open Thursday-Sunday. Good beer, the staff is very friendly and the setting is beautiful. They have fire pits out back and wood, ask at the bar and they will give you paper and a lighter to start a fire. Great place to chat with locals.

As others mentioned, look up the George’s River land trust hiking network. Lots of trails very nearby Union in Hope, Warren, Waldoboro, etc.

If you want a very very basic breakfast out, Come Spring Cafe is in Union. Cash only. Moodys Diner in Waldoboro is better.

Edit: You are also striking distance (~35 minutes or so) from Belfast. You can take a very scenic drive on Route 131 through Appleton past a few ponds, go through Searsmont which has Thresher's Brewery which has live music and a full kitchen now, and then turn on Route 3 at Belmont Corner and go into Belfast that has a bunch of things do see/do. Nice little shops to check out, some good restos, Marshall Wharf brewing which is excellent, Young's Lobster Pound which is open year round if you want a lobster roll and are prepared to pay a premium for a January lobster roll. Also, the gas station on Rte 17 has a surprisingly decent prime rib takeout dinner for $20 on Friday and Saturday nights. I know, gas station prime rib, but I got it a couple months ago and it was good.

I've been there. Couple of friends from there. I think it's called crystal lake road. On that street is a giant family with like a hundred broken down cars.

I live in Union and if you're looking for a nice but quick hike you can check out Ragged Mountain up the road on 17. It's only 7 minutes away on the left.

Hatchet Mountain in Hope is good for 1. a view of the Camden Hills and 2. exploring an abandoned telephone tower.

The breakwater is sus during winter. I went on Christmas day and thought better than to go out. One slip, and you're a gonner. But maybe at low tide on one of these 50 degree days we have been having? It's probably better to just trek over to Owls Head if you feel like driving.

Maiden cliff should be fine. Wear spikes, take trekking poles, and stay away from the cliff itself. We don't need a reason for a second cross up there. Also, I would turn around and come back at the cliff instead of continuing on. It turns into a bit of a scramble afterward. However, Mount Meginticook trail from the state park is safe all the way up (with spikes, at least).
