Traveling to Maine in September with my husband (we're in our 40's). I was hoping to get some help with my itinerary! We're doing 2-3 nights in Portland and then 2-3 nights in Bar Harbor. He wants to do a lot of relaxing, drinking beer, eating good local food. I don't eat seafood, and want to see the local sights and do some hiking (nothing too hard or long, not my husband's idea of a good vacation!). So far I have: Portland- Ferry to Peaks Island, go to some breweries (Allagash and Bissel Brothers), walk around Old Port, go to Freeport and check out Wolfe Neck State Park and Maine Beer Company. We'll stop at Coastal Maine botanical gardens on the way to Bar Harbor. For Bar Harbor, I have: make a reservation for sunrise hike to Cadillac Mountain; Jordan pond hike and bubbles, and then popovers at Jordan Pond House. Walk the sand bar at low tide to Bar Island. Maybe take a ferry somewhere (whale watching? I'd like to see wildlife). In Portland we'll probably stay at an airbnb in our near Old Port. Any recommendations to stay in Bar Harbor? Hotels are ridiculously expensive. Is it better to stay close to town? We will have a car. And I've seen tons of posts that say restaurants, etc, aren't really open after the summer. We'll be there mid- September: are many things going to be closed at that time? I'll take any critiques or advice you wanna throw at me! My husband is just getting back from a deployment in the Middle East the week before, and I want this trip to be nice!
