I was afraid Maine history would be boring, but it is bonkers. There was a time when Bangor had weekly riots.

Colin is a good dude. American Nation's is also great
Yes it is! I've really enjoyed all his works that I've read, from books to opinion pieces in the PPH.
I have not. This is my first foray into Maine history, and I appreciate the suggestion
Look up Higgins, Gratwick and Duncan.
I got the Gratwick book, Hidden History. The Battle of Machias is pretty entertaining. A bunch of hungry Irish Mainers doing some pirate stuff against the British. Neat
Hard Times, Hard Men is why my great great grandma moved here in the first place!
Just ordered 3 books on Maine history, including 2 on the maritime. Giving as gifts.
Mundy has a good one on the Second Maine Volunteers during the Civil War, too.
Iād also recommend checking out books by John Gould.
I saw "Second to None". I'll have to check it out.
I took a Maine history course last summer, it was the only class that I could pick freely. It was fantastic!
On a side note, I got a newspapers.com subscription this past year, for genealogy purposes. My grandfather was arrested for beating up a parking meter in Portland. Totally irrelevant to this post, but I found it hilarious!
Your grandfather sounds like a freedom fighter, god bless
Idk, he had anger issues lmao. Luckily for us grandkids, it never showed
Sorry to hear that š just figured that parking meter had it coming for them
I mean, it was a parking meter, so it probably did lol
There is a book called Through a howling wilderness by Thomas A. Desjardin depicting Benedict Arnold's march through Maine to Quebec which is quite the story.
Yup. The KKK got going up here because of those damned Catholics! My friend Charlie travels the state, shooting photos in every town. His memory is as good as mine is bad (and that's really saying something,) and he has some incredible stories about Maine's past & present.
The relationship between the Catholics and the KKK is bizarre. Half the time, Catholics are running the Klan out of town.

I'm gonna ask the library to find this for me! Have you read Colin Woodard's Lobster Coast? Mostly focused on the coast, but very interesting to read.
