I'll blame em:

The only reason CC theft is profitable is EXACTLY because of the scrap and salvage folks willing to buy what they absolutely know to be stolen materials.

I'll say it loud and proud. Yes. That - and the thieves - are who are to blame. The thieves would steal other shit if this wasn't made profitable by the existence of a completely wild-west, unregulated marketplace. It's that marketplace, and the ease of the crime, that make it such a problem. Police the marketplace because the ease of crime is difficult to tackle.

CC marking - and making the REVOMAL OR GRINDING OF SAID MARKS A CRIME, which makes being in possession of them a crime, would be a great way to address the recycling/scrap side of this issue... which is a primary way of combatting it due to the speed and ease in which a CC can be removed.

If LE rolled in and found unmarked CCs, boom, we got us a winner. There's no way to accidentally do shit and you've closed a bullshit blame hole.

It’s always the same pole there. I almost hit it once. It’s right in front of the door, so it’s easy to get distracted watching for pedestrians on your right as you try to turn left up the parking lane. Then the pole and sign will line right up behind the pillar of your cars’ windshield. There’s no curb or anything around it to warn or slow you down.

Edit: as someone else mentioned, its a sharper turn than 90d and there’s always people crossing and walking down the lane on the right, so it’s natural to want to cut the corner when turning left.

And I’d also like to thank all the Captain Obviouses saying to just slow down or “look out for the big stop sign on a yellow pole”. I’ll put the message out and I’m sure this will never happen again at this location.

22

floppleshmirken t1_ixjy5cg wrote

If you’re trying to turn left right there and you hit that pole, that means you’re turning into the wrong side of the lane. Why would you be on the left side of the lane?

12

exvnoplvres t1_ixse0pq wrote

This is why I always park out in the farther areas of parking lots, to stay away from pedestrians. That is a good point about the pillars on the sides of windshields. They are much larger these days than they used to be even 20 years ago. In the summer, before entering a road, I always do a sort of head swinging movement both left and right so I can see around the pillars and make sure there isn't anyone coming from either direction.

Way2L8AND1 t1_ixl3tid wrote

The stop sign is for people coming down the aisle, not for people turning left, so you don’t even know the situation.

Nobody’s speeding through there Einstein, my point is there’s no other barrier or curb to prevent cars from hitting the pole. It’s obviously a poor design that creates a hazardous situation if this many people have hit it. At some point Walmart becomes at least partially responsible for creating the hazard.

It's actually kind of a weird parking lot. There are several of these bollards that are just out in the middle of nowhere between the building and the parking spots, no curbs or anything. You can see in the photo it's just sort of in the middle of the pavement.

Also the parking lanes are not 90° to the building, they are more like 110°, which makes all the intersections feel a bit wonky. You can see it on Google Maps if you are curios.

Not that it's really an excuse but there is a reason.

10

EngineersAnon t1_ixjxlbl wrote

>there is a reason.

Yes, the reason is negligence by inadequately attentive drivers.

2

DifferenceMore5431 t1_ixjzb6x wrote

There's a kernel of truth to that. But you are really missing the bigger picture. If the root cause was "inadequately attentive drivers" in general, you would expect to see this kind of thing all over the area in various parking lots. But you don't. It's just this one specific part of one specific parking lot that has been proven to be confusing many, many times. There is something different about this one.

16

EngineersAnon t1_ixk170s wrote

There are, it seems, conditions in this specific lot which make the consequences of inattention greater, but the root cause of hitting a stationary object with a motor vehicle is driver inattention and negligence.

0

DifferenceMore5431 t1_ixk4u36 wrote

I'm not sure I agree. It's easy to dunk on Walmart patrons but in my opinion the bizarre layout of the bollards and irregular angles of the lanes are the root cause here.

9

eljefino t1_iy1m25z wrote

And if they aren't rubbernecking around their A-pillar blind spots to look for bollards they aren't doing it for pedestrians. Let them pay and maybe learn.

2

EngineersAnon t1_iy1nuj0 wrote

Bollards are a fuck of a lot easier to repair than people, and repairs are cheaper, too.

1

BuddyBear17 t1_ixm2r9p wrote

Yeah this is a site plan review failure by the city. Guarantee that there's some city standard for parking lot design that isn't met by this, it's a safety/fire access hazard. Last thing you need is some ambulance hitting it at night.

People drive like idiots. The pole is on the left hand corner and everyone that hits it is turning left there. THIS IS THE US, WE DRIVE ON THE RIGHT SIDE, so why are you trying to turn into the left side of the row of parking spots?

13

RealMainer t1_ixkceq9 wrote

Yeah you can't really blame Walmart for this. The poles are there to prevent idiots from running into people or other cars. Bumping into the poles happens on a daily basis (I noticed just yesterday that three of the poles are already bent even though they were just replaced this summer), but in order to flip your car on one of these poles you have to be driving way too fast and aggressively. This person definitely deserved to have their car flipped.

There is clearly a problem with the pole placement. Someone mentioned odd angles and such. I know the perfect drivers here have never made a mistake and all. I've almost hit one of these poles myself. You have the combination of a blind spot from the windshield pillar with people darting in and out between cars and that man with the small phallus starts backing his monster truck at you and you turn quick to dodge it.

Something should be done. The pole needs to be there, what about putting one of those cages that they put on trees around it? Put some smaller poles around it? Put a curb around it?
