I love York hospital, but am having a hard time finding info on their birthing center which seems new and seems to be in place of a maternity ward. Only 2 google reviews, one of which was glowing and the other a 1 star with no explanation. Anyone given birth here before and want to share their experience? Thank you!

Generally, your OBGYN will help to guide you, also they strongly suggest you tour the facilities while pregnant so you can get a sense of ehat to expect.

All former maternity wards are birthing centers. Long gone are the days when you were in a plain white room with harsh lighting. I gave birth to my son 24 years ago at the Mercy Birthing center in portland.

12 year ago I gave birth to my daughter at the MMC birthing center, in my daughters case they had a birthing tub and shower en suite which I didn't use because luckily my labors are short.

Google reviews are kind of crap. I suggest going and visiting, and checking with your OBGYN.

Live in York, our daughter was born at Maine Med due to York Hospital not having the same type of care in case of an emergency. Re: NICU. My wife had to have an emergency C-Section and we ended up staying at Maine Med for a week due to some complications. Best experience I’ve ever had as the non birthing parent. (Prepandemic). My wife agrees. York Hospital would have had to transfer us out and we don’t have much faith in the hospital in York due to other reasons outside of the birthing center.

Our OBGYN is out of Coastal Womens in Scarborough, so it was part of the deal to go to MM anyways. I know many women who have used Portsmouth Regional.

Thanks. I've heard great things about Maine Med but it's a 50 minute drive from us on a good day. Wasnt sure if it was worth going somewhere that far. I wont go to Portsmouth Regional for my own reasons haha. I know too many things.

Unfortunately these days it’s hard to feel great about any hospital. The pandemic has been hard on the healthcare system.

My son was born there in 2019. Great experience.

I have not given birth here, but I personally wouldn’t want to be there if any major emergencies took place during your birth. They do not have a NICU and would have to transfer you out if there was a major issue (with baby or with you). If things are status quo and go smoothly, I’m sure it’s perfectly lovely. I grew up in York and for anything major, we’d go elsewhere.

To my own point, maybe just ask what they do in the case of an emergency. Where do they transfer you and what does that process look like (ambulance/air lift)?

Portsmouth hospital is a ten minute ambalamps ride. I believe new parents also get lobster rolls at the hospital. The food is great and people from town eat lunch there, or they did in the before times.
