Hey all, I'm currently a teacher here in Maine, been in the profession a few years, have a B.S. in Biology. I'm tired of working for peanuts with no real progression potential. I've looked at research positions, but all of them seemingly pay $18-$21 an hour---at which point I could just stay as a teacher. Anyways, point being, before I'm 30 I'd like to transition to a career that I can develop tangible skills and make real money in.
I've recently heard about BIW offering a $23.50/hr entry level positions and have seriously considered entering the trades to do electrical work or perhaps becoming a welder. Has anyone done this program, or gone through the apprenticeship? If you have worked at Bath Ironworks already, can you share the good and the bad? I'm not afraid of hard work, and have worked 60+ hours 7 day work weeks to make ends meet. Also, of all the positions, which ones are typically the better ones to work in, electrician / painter / machinist etc?

As a retired mechanic I will add just one part of the equation. How trades affect your body physically. A lot of times you have to work in less than optimal weather conditions. Breathe crap, Stand/sit and use limbs in awkward positions for extended periods of time. It takes a toll. I am not minimizing teaching, just saying what I never realized about my profession.
