I am considering applying to the U of Maine online for the Masters of Data Science. Wondering has anyone done their online program (regardless of major). if it is a good school. Are all their online courses asynchronous. Is it worth applying or do you recommend any other schools? Thanks

I did my Bachelor’s degree through Southern New Hampshire and it was a good experience. You can take more than one online course per term. I usually did two at a time but did 3 towards the end to try to wrap it up a little quicker.

Been a while since I’ve looked but if you can get courses done online through a local college it might be cheaper. Not sure if community colleges offer core courses online… and then get your degree specific courses done at a college that offers them… worth looking into.

It's a good school. I did the online MS Spatial Informatics program and it went well for me. The professors are great (many work on cutting-edge research), the classes are skill-oriented, and there are a ton of elective options. You can also pick up a Graduate Certificate while getting your Masters without having to take additional classes (you just have to choose the right electives). Some classes take place during the standard work day, but a fully asynchronous schedule is also possible (that's what I did since I was working full-time). I definitely think you should apply if you're looking for an affordable online program that is also academically solid. Good luck.

If you’re doing data science + online, have you considered the Georgia Tech program? I haven’t done it, but have heard good things from some that have.

Yes and no, when I did the online thing at least three of my “professors” lacked knowledge of the course material. Buyer beware.

Do you want to learn? If so online colleges are a joke, the information is recycled and often out of date.

Are you looking to get your masters and don’t want to work that hard? Online school is the way to go! At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter where the degree comes from, your resume will still say you have a MS

Are you disciplined, can you sit through online lectures. Can you stay motivated and do the work without going to class in person?

I'm halfway through that program right now. Most of my classes have been asynchronous. I'm in one right now that's technically synchronous, but attendance isn't part of the grade so I still just watch the lectures after work.

It's a pretty new program so it doesn't seem super well structured/cohesive, but depending on which classes you take, there is some useful material, and a lot of overlap in other departments (spatial informatics, business, computer science).

I will say though, I probably wouldn't keep going if I didn't have my work paying for it. I've taken a couple classes (a couple from the business school come to mind) where I really feel like I learned nothing.
