Do you climb or mountain bike?
Rephrased: do you want to climb or mountain bike?
Climbing has a low cost to entry, and is a welcoming and inclusive community.
Mountain biking has a high cost to entry, and is also a welcoming an inclusive community.
If not, check out Jetpack comics down in Rochester nh. Solid tabletop gaming community with an open game room with weekly game nights.

A thousand times yes. I’ve wanted to learn to scuba and mountain climb so it would be awesome to have a community to work with. Thank you for that man :)
I just got a gym membership and clothes today. I’d like to get more active and in shape (i weight 160 soaking wet) I’m planning on doing the Appalachian trail next spring!

Climbing has many different communities and subtypes, so start slow, learn the basics, build strength, technique, and technical knowledge, and figure out what you enjoy. Start with bouldering and top roping, progress to sport, then maybe investigate alpine, ice, and trad(itional) climbing. Gym or outdoor, there’s no wrong answer. You can usually connect with the community at the gym by showing up regularly and getting to know people. It might seem insular at first, but only because rope climbing is so heavily based on trust.
Salt pump in Scarborough is good, as is Indoor Ascent in Dover. Never climbed Evo in Portland, but one of my partners is a setter there, so I’ve been meaning to check it out. Come summertime, it’s all about Rumney.

Wow, you have been an excellent source of knowledge and inspiration. I even like that I’m already learning the lingo! I really like that it’s very trust oriented and climbers respect that, makes me feel better. The “I have your back 100% do you have mine” mentally gives a great feeling of teamwork and accomplishment.
I’ll have to check out the indoor place at Portland in a little while after exercising and getting ready :)
