Gaming on Linux or Windows? You could consider 1gpu for gaming and all the rest of the space for A6000 for ML. Price/hassle wise I think they are still very hard to beat.

The plan is to dual boot windows and ubuntu. Benchmarks from lambda labs show that 3090 and a6000 are very close, are there any benchmarks with 4090?

Wasn't able to find one. Personally I wouldn't go for 4x 4090 (or even 3090) as that requires at probably an extra PSU and custom water-cooling with 2 radiators. I'd stick with 2 at most, however make sure to get them blower style.

No, I can't afford 4x 4090s. I'll start with a single 4090 with custom water loop and add a second 4090 in a year or so. From what I understand a high end gaming MB can support that, looking at the builds from mifcom.de

If you start with just one you can postpone the water cooling. The real issue is the power consumption and thus the case. If you max at 2-3 you might be able to pull it off even without going as far as getting TR, my 3950x and MB can run 3gpus
