Let’s cancel him. We can’t have dissenting opinions. Everyone must be assimilated by the socialist-borg.

Resistance is futile

It's not about socialism, it's about how you approach engineering as a culture. Remember Elon asking for prints of diffs and LOC counts? Now he's asking for screenshots of 'salient code'.

One tweet David Ha liked today says "Elon musk told Twitter employees “do actual work or you’re fired” and 85% of the staff left instantly 💀💀💀". That is toxic to say that people who didn't want to put up with this are useless and lazy

Maybe he just likes the drama. Or maybe he wants to bump up the tweet. Can't really know what he thinks from just likes.

Why would you personally care about someone (that don't even know you) liking Tweets? You don't know what he is thinking anyway

Because I follow him and so do many others. When you like something it shows your followers the tweets. And he's a public face of ML on social media so many people will be concerned at his cheerleading.

While most in ML and tech are expressing dismay (e.g Chollet), it is just concerning that he seems to be revelling in what is happening to Twitter engineers (of whom I know a few)

Interesting to contrast the reactions of Chollet (ML library engineer at Google) vs Ha (former Goldman Sachs, 'strategy' guy). Chollet is vociferously speaking about the impacts that will come when you shut down engineering

I'm trying to shine a light where David Ha is likely trying to quietly hide his intentions as a bad actor. And to memorialise what he is doing (so that when the backtracking comes we have evidence of it)

Would one work for him now that we know he is revelling in Twitter engineers being trampled upon?

I must have missed the memo, is Musk a Hitler tier figure now?

What exactly did he do that offends you so much that hasn't been done by countless other people you don't mind? Be a rapacious businessman like most big tech businessmen? Let go of a bunch of Twitter employees like tons of other companies? Charging for bluecheckmarks?

Yeah let’s cancel this guy based on tweets he likes about some crazy drama unravelling before our eyes. Let’s also cancel all the other people liking the tweets for how ridiculous the events are.

By the way strats at Goldman = quantitative modelling + technology (engineering) so you don’t even know what you’re talking about when you bring up his career history - saying “strategy” in quotes.

Guess you don’t need AI when you have mind-reading abilities.

We really need a new sub called /r/MachineLearningGossip. This sub is getting ridiculous. Mods, what does this have to do with machine learning?

In this case it's about Twitter and Elon more than ML. The only link to ML is stalking a prominent person's behavior on social media.

Why do we allow these?

Codac123 t1_iwz77ie wrote

Seeing the replies, I'm glad people in the sub have an ounce of common sense, go over to programming humor and everyone there is a whiny nut job right now.

So heartwarming to see sanity in the replies here. Thanks everyone.

Also, David Ha is a warm, loving human being. Great guy. I'm sure no one at his company cares about the tweets he likes, lol, sorry...

If there is anything toxic, it's (people like) you and this post.

You basically fall into the large pool of people who decides the state of the world just by reading news headlines.

Sure, the whole ML community has to get together and hold a council meeting to debate this issue and then write a formal letter to hardmaru which tells him to stop liking Musk's tweets or else!!

Not sure, if you have understood it, but you can like whatever you want. You can also follow whoever you want. If you don't like hardmaru, because he flushes Musk tweets down your timeline, then just silence or unfollow him. It's your right not to like or follow a certain person, it's not another person's obligation to be liked by you.

Twitter is a very simple app.

There are companies that run things of Twitter's complexity level but with ten or less engineers. It is perfectly feasible. You may see such things in payment processing, for example.

Then upon that Twitter does lots of analytics for advertising, manipulation/censorship, part of which is a regulatory requirement but most of which is intentional and for the benefit of Twitter's owners and advertisers. That was their major business, and that's why their activity has ballooned.

It's entirely possible to write a small distributed Twitter-like computer program that acts like a mesh network and is user controlled. Many such programs exist and function perfectly, but have not reached critical mass.
