Orrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr you can rinse the cup while the washer is still filling up with wator

Edit: Definitely did not think about newer washers. The one we use was made before the 00’s. Sorry folks!

A lot of the newer washers, especially the ones without the center agitator do not start filling up with water until you close the lid. When you open the lid up again, the water stops. It kind of sucks.

Mine locks the lid as soon as it starts the cycle. I heartily dislike the set, especially since I can't figure out how to turn off the stupid song-alarm on the dryer.

Did you read the manual? Can also find them online if you threw it out

Intelligent-Fuel-641 t1_j9lkkbx wrote

This is a rental, so the manual either is with the owner or got tossed. I’ll try online again — I did once before but got distracted by prices and never followed through.

Yes but water not wator

This is how I did it until I got a high efficiency washer that locks the lid before the water starts. It hasn't been a problem since switching, though.

I think mine was from the '90's or before. I hated it until it broke, then when it was so easy to repair - a few screws - I started to love it.

That’s going to get messy with a front loader (more popular than top loaders in many European countries)

chemistryofacarcrash t1_j9i01u4 wrote

Just don’t forget about it and accidentally throw it in the dryer as well

I always do this, is it bad or something?

2

Intelligent-Fuel-641 t1_j9inyk4 wrote

I've done it on occasion, usually if the cup was in a sleeve or something. Nothing bad happened. It's not like I'm going to use the same cup for a long time.

If it is on max heat, it might make the plastic soft and mark clothing. I’m only entertaining hypotheticals

The only bad thing that happens is it clanging around loudly it’s very annoying.

I've been doing that trick for as long as I can remember, and fully agree. Doesn't make sense not doing it.

How about when a lid of detergent bottle is a cup

LPT: use powdered detergent. Liquid detergent is a ripoff and is bad for your machine and clothing

6

BallisticHabit t1_j9illo5 wrote

Never heard this.

As an an exclusive liquid user, i'm curious.

Care to elaborate?

containedsun t1_j9j38oc wrote

liquid detergent is mostly water, and leaves residue on the machine and the clothes.

And detergent powder is 95% filler.

V_es t1_j9lc3cd wrote

You have a plastic thing rubbing and smashing delicate fabric. It weathers down clothes.

fibonakki t1_j9mqsp3 wrote

I got bad news for you. The inside of most washing mashines are made of metal and usually even have plastic parts inside to stir the clothes more.

This “tip” is part of the instructions printed on the packaging, along with “Add detergent first, then add clothes.”

I also wash the cup and use the soap when I do hand washing. Tennis shoes, muddy hiking shoes, or anything that requires hand washing.

Since we’re taking about laundry LPT’s- 2 tablespoons of laundry detergent should be enough for a regular load of clothes.

1

ElJamoquio t1_j9ks9w1 wrote

When I was down to the last half-load of detergent, I'd just throw the whole bottle in, although this means you'll have a half-full bottle of detergent when the load is done. I guess you could poke a hole in the bottom but I never felt the need.

SP3NGL3R t1_j9ib7rh wrote

Ooooorrrrrr throw the cap away on day 1 and just put the detergent in directly. It's not baking, the volumes can be off by a little and by the age of "first doing laundry + 5 years" you should have it dialed.
