I've done it on occasion, usually if the cup was in a sleeve or something. Nothing bad happened. It's not like I'm going to use the same cup for a long time.

If it is on max heat, it might make the plastic soft and mark clothing. I’m only entertaining hypotheticals

The only bad thing that happens is it clanging around loudly it’s very annoying.
