LPT: Under No Circumstances Neglect Your Professional Social Media

The recent layoffs at the tech giants, reminded me of this. No matter how big the employer, or how secure you think your position is never neglect or fall behind on your professional social media presence or your networking. It’s easy to be lulled into a sense of complacency, but after many years, it’s hard to rebuild your social media, thought leadership, or networking. Without these things in today’s market, getting a new position is becoming increasingly more difficult.

I have never had any social media accounts under my real name. You cannot find the real me on the internet. My MySpace was Turd Ferguson for years.

I respect that, but in todays hiring market much of it happens on LinkedIn. If you can bypass that great, but right now I’m seeing very smart and capable people scrambling to get noticed by recruiters. It’s something that should be at least considered.

I can dig that too, and I understand that for some professions you really do need an active social media presence. A big problem though is a lot of people have just been posting every crazy thing they do under their real names and if you get Googled during the hiring process they are gonna find stuff they won't / might not like.

Luckily I'm in a medical field where that stuff doesn't matter as long as they aren't finding any horrible shit associated with my name lol.

Agree most vociferous!! I’m bewildered by the number of people posting things they wouldn’t want an employer or a potential date to see under their real names. I also don’t use my real name for Social Media except LinkedIn and I don’t post my opinions on the best anal lubes in LinkedIn. Those worlds should be kept completely separated, as Offspring famously sang.
