And also thank them for their volunteering.
Just see their faces brighten up when they hear that.

How does one go about finding a volunteer attendant?

Sometimes they're called docents. Also, sometimes they get paid. Not often though.

I did this once! The exhibit was full of people, and the attendant seemed genuinely surprised and happy I asked. It was a painting that wouldn’t have stood out to me otherwise, and actually now is the only one I really remember from it because of a few small details. Total gem that I would have otherwise overlooked.

I'll add that lot of unpaid museum docents are retired. (because who else has that kind of time?) For bonus points, find the very oldest docent you can and they might tell you some really interesting stuff.

In my country they are paid, and they don't give a shit about the art. It's better this way.

Some museums do have their volunteer attendants wear a badge saying that. I believe the Detroit Institute of Art does that.
I love going there to see the Diego Rivera murals and hear about Frida Kahlo.

Indeed. You got that right.

I volunteered for the US Cup in 1993 and for the World Cup in 1994.
I must say this volunteer thing is an American way of doing things. Lions Clubs, Rotarian clubs, Elks, etc.

Volunteering for Fifa huh.. bet you won't do that again :)

No. I didn’t see it that way at the time.
I live in Michigan and the Pontiac Silverdome was chosen as one of the sites for three WC games.
It was the only way I could get in to see the games since the tickets were out of my reach.
It’s the game I was interested in, not the institutional grift that FIFA is.

Real LPT: while they're distracted, let your accomplice nick the most valuable painting in the museum.
