Who has newspapers or magazines anymore?

I was going to say the same thing. Who has newspapers and magazines anymore? I even put a sign on my mailbox asking for the mail person to not leave shopping ads and junk mail in the box! I keep a couple of paper bags and rolls of Dollar store generic wrapping paper in the back of the closet! Does the job....

A few years ago my mail person told me that I could opt out of ads and general junk mail. As long as it doesn't have my name on it I don't receive it. So rarely do I get anything. And for the couple of postcards and the such that I do get I put it in recycling.

So personally I ask for a paper bag occasionally and for $1.25 or on sale I pick up a roll or 2 of generic wrapping paper. A few years ago I received reusable paper towels, microfiber clothes and old baby diapers as a gift that I use for cleaning windows, mirrors and dusting. Rags are wonderful for general cleaning purposes. At my old job I received several dozen bar rags that were practically brand new. They were getting rid of them because the company that did their laundry were changing the colors - from blue to white!

Do you really do this? Your mail carrier is not your personal secretary. They don't have time to rifle through your mail and try to determine what you would deem junk mail and they also don't need to carry your garbage around with them for the remainder of their route.

Yup, I really do this! About 7 years ago I remarked how irritating it was to receive such a great amount of junk mail and I wished there was a way to opt out of getting it. It was suggested by the my mail person that I put a note on the mailbox requesting no junk mail. So I took the suggestion and did it. Unless it specifically has my name on it I don't get junk ads and newspapers. Is this a perfect solution? Nope. When there is a fill in mail person it's a 50/50 chance of getting the ads and junk mail. It's not a big deal I just drop it in the recycling box. My mail carrier says they just take it back to the USPS and drop it into recycling.

And just an FYI.. The secretary at work doesn't get rid of useless junk mail for me. I riffle through my own mail and drop it in the recycling bin - thank goodness I get very little. There really should be a way to opt out of junk mail like there is for spam calls!

Edit: Just for clarity, they don't personally carry the mail to the mail box. They drive up in a jeep, open their window and put the mail in the mail box. There is a box in the vehicle that they collect junk, etc and when they get back to the USPS and it goes into recycling. If it has my name on it then it has to be delivered to me.

Are you fucking serious blaming your hard-working mail carrier for bulk mass marketing?

xal1124 t1_j1jkhza wrote

I mean some things are obvious

Also, they’re already supposed to filter out mail from previous tenants.

Yes they filter mail from previous tenants but I would bet it's not legal for them to withhold mail. Someone paid for it after all

I'm not blaming the mail person for the junk mail. I do blame the companies who are sending it to me. The original conversation started when I was trying to get companies to stop sending me their garbage!

Just like setting up a spam folder in email or being able to opt out of spam calls there should be a way to get rid of unwanted junk mail. And to make it clear, it's not the mail persons fault!

We get tons at my job. I’ve been wrapping my gifts in magazine pages for years, I just grab them out of the recycling at work as needed.

This is why I go to Free Comic Book Day. It's free and fun wrapping paper. I used to use the Sunday comics, but I don't get the paper anymore.

Most newspapers and periodicals are not reliable sources of information anymore

Also get out the colored markers and write "fancy wrapping paper" all over it.

A lot of shipped packages have paper for padding that can be used, as well. And you can decorate it to your liking.

You could switch to not using wrapping paper at all.
