As the car in front of you passes a static object on the side of the road (like a telephone pole) count how many seconds it takes you to reach that same object in your vehicle. That’s how much time you have to respond if the car in front came to a dead stop (like from a head on collision). Give minimum 3 seconds. This assumes you’re going roughly the same speed.
