Quicker/easier math is take hourly, x40 x52. you get the actual yearly pre-tax without the wierd conversion.

Sounds like a way to get an inaccurate answer in two steps (multiply by two, them by 1000) vs getting an accurate answer in two steps (multiply by 40, then by 52)

One can be done instantly by anyone, the other cannot.

I don’t understand…

gotBooched OP t1_iws6p6t wrote

Example if you make $20 an hour - multiple that times two is 40

You’ll make $40k a year

Actual math is $41600 in a 40 hour week over the course of a year but if you’re hunting jobs it’s always good to be able to quickly convert whatever hourly pay they offer

So when you say double, you mean x2,000

gotBooched OP t1_iws7oal wrote

If you want to take something extremely simple and add an unnecessary layer of complexity, yes.

Target audience is someone getting offered $13.40 an hour

You're not making any sense at all.

I would argue OP does make sense. This tip is meant for people who might not know how to do the math.

nick5111 t1_iws6yni wrote

Ah ok. Interesting! I guess it’s not too hard to do the actual math either, but this works for convenience

The rule of thumb is take your hour wage and multiply by 2,000 will give you an approximate annual gross.

Conversly, if you know your annual wage, divide it by 2,000 to calculate an hourly wage

2

gotBooched OP t1_iws85he wrote

Or you could just double it

1

tvieno t1_iwsb6bx wrote

Then multiply it by 1,000.

2

gotBooched OP t1_iwscgu9 wrote

You could multiple it by 10000 and then divide

1

tvieno t1_iwsegy3 wrote

Or multiply by 2000 in one step and call it done.

2

gotBooched OP t1_iwsihq0 wrote

You’re done after just multiplying by two

tvieno t1_iwsjp4k wrote

No. If my hourly wage was $25. If I multiply it by 2, then my annual wage would be $50.

No, if you want to know how much you make in a year, multiply your hourly pay by your hours a week, and then by 52. Otherwise you're calculating twice your pay, which isn't helpful

Competitive-Ad7847 t1_iwudprf wrote

Hourly pay x 2080 = yearly pay

1

gotBooched OP t1_iwue6pm wrote

no it isn’t

Competitive-Ad7847 t1_iwueifo wrote

Are you serious? That's literally 40x52. It is an incredibly common calculation

1

gotBooched OP t1_iwuew3h wrote

What is the X between the 40 and 52? And where is the 52 coming from??
