Isn't it more concerning that someone got into your account though?

they don't get into your account fully. they just associate the Google number with their phone

With Gmail you can add a + to the end, e.g. myname+vendorname@gmail.com to create a unique email per vendor. Can you do something similar with phone numbers? I don't think Gvoice lets you have unlimited numbers.

I thought you could replace it whenever you wanted? Not infinite at the same time, but you can cycle through numbers

I've had some co-workers that I didn't want to have my actual cell number so I used a Google number.

I’ve been an advocate for this since Voice came out. I also advocate for making a spam gmail account (such as myspamemail@gmail.com) to tie the number to. Now if you need to sign up on a website in order to view information, or want to sign up for the 10% discount offer that pops up on the website you are browsing, you can do so without concern of clogging your active email account with more spam to filter out. Yes I know filters work great, but having a dedicated spam email account is probably the best filter you can have in my opinion.

Google voice isn't available in my country, India. Does anybody know an alternate?

Alternatively you could grow a pair and tell them you don't give your number out

Or, and please keep with me on this one: tell them you don't want to give them your number? A simple "no" should suffice.

LPT, many hackers will try to make a Google voice number in your name (on your account). but if you already have one then they can't since Google only allows one per account.
they want to make a Google voice number on your account and user it to hack others over the phone and set you up.
simply make a Google number and then use it at least once every couple months to keep it active. that's it. then nobody can make one in your name and do shady stuff with it
