Another option is to look at the screen to line up the photo, then look at the lens through the mirror before taking the photo. This way you're looking at your 'audience' rather than your phone's screen.

Yes, you have the right idea, except you wouldn’t actually be looking at the camera lens in the mirror in this case. Instead, you just look at the camera lens that you are holding in front of yourself.

The mirror is only used to line up the shot at the beginning and to make sure your finger is over the camera button.

I understand what you are saying though. It’s important to always focus your gaze on the lens of the camera so that in the photo that gets taken, it looks like you are gazing directly towards the audience.

No, not missing the point (screen towards mirror, using reflection to line up image), just suggesting an small alteration to what people already do. Typically for those who like to show off their phones.
