Tonight in order to do my work I have to do an all-nighter. I have stuff that’s been building up and I couldn’t keep up so I HAVE to do it today. My only problem is every time I pull an all nighter I’m extremely tired that the next day I can hardly function. I plan on napping a little before the all nighter but other than that I’m not sure how to feel at least able to function tomorrow. I have work on top of my classes, so I have to be able to make it to 4pm. After that I can get sweet sweet rest, but not until 4. How can I survive ? What are some tips, things to do, eat, drink, whatever. Help!!

Call in sick? Do your work then? There's no way to cheat sleep.

Drink lots of water before, during and after drinking - and take b12 vitamin.

Heck, take a couple of multi-vitamins. Cover all your bases.

That’s a good suggestion too. :) Alcohol depletes or blocks absorption of the B vitamins. Lack of them makes you feel pretty rough. The more B you can get back into your person the better.

There's a whole spectrum of answers to this question, ranging from "get drunk again" to "don't drink the night before".

I do night shifts sometimes. The best way to feel refreshed is to take several power naps (maybe 5-10 min each). Make sure your alarm is on. You might feel like shit waking up from these power naps, but overall you wouldn't feel as bad compared to if you didn't power nap at all.

From a procastinator who was regularly forced to work night shifts. Exercise while learning. You can also practice flashcards while walking. Instead of sleeping, take 3 power naps. I take a key in my hand so that it falls down and I get scared to know when I have slept enough. Don't forget to set a safty alarm clock. The last tip really works wonders for a short time. Put an ice cube between the 1 and 2 cubes you feel below the back of your skull and let it completely melt there. Many important nerve pathways converge here and with the cooling you reduce the membrane potential and can thus imitate the effect of several hours of sleep. Of course, in the end, nothing replaces deep sleep and you should be aware that the later the hour, the higher your error rate. so complicated things are better done early and formatting rather at the end.

It’s all perception. Eat well. Drink water. Believe in yourself.

I have a friend that will literally go a whole week without sleeping (which I personally do not have the mental fortitude for).

There are plenty of people that will do a two hour meditation and not sleep but be fully functional.

The fact of the matter is that you have followed a set schedule of sleep/wake with the rising and setting of the sun. These people have broken that cycle. Not saying that it is easy, but it is all in your head.

Meth. Seriously. Or the socially acceptable form of it, amphetamines as Adderall or Vyvanse.

Or use your mental faculties to not put yourself in this situation in the first place. As someone else said, you can't cheat sleep.
