I need to move to another state, but I'm not sure what to use. A full moving company would obviously be very expensive. PODS is a little pricey but I could drive my car and not drive a truck. Uhaul is a lot cheaper, but people said that the true price can be double or triple. Plus with Uhaul I'd have to drive the truck and tow my car behind it which is scary. What is the best way to move?
Pro tip from my brother: you can send it via Greyhound bus and will probably be much cheaper than anywhere else.
Be careful. I did this. The stuff arrived, but they beat the crap out of the boxes and let them get wet. Ruined a bunch of stuff.
I've used greyhound freight. It was like $10 to ship a car bumper from Minneapolis to Mississippi 10 years ago. Rates are probably a little higher now.
Budget or Ryder trucks are way cheaper than U-Haul in my experience. You hire movers to load the truck and other movers to unload the truck at the destination.
But seriously, if you have no idea how to move, I doubt you can pull this off.
ALSO, having a reservation for a rental truck does NOT mean you will get one. They overbook and you can be super-screwed and get a shrug from the company.
sell everything. give up on material things. move to the woods. eat pinecones and commune with the chipmunks. forget about the hustle and bustle of city life, and ponder the boulders and the stumps.

PODs is the safest. Driving a U Haul is precarious.
If moving yourself and towing a car, get the trailer that has all 4 of your car's wheels off of the ground.
I used a UHaul container to move my stuff across country and it worked out great. However it was about $1400 so not cheap. But maybe cheaper than hiring movers.

You can get a cheaper moving company, but they're notorious for "losing" boxes. Uhaul doesn't bait and switch, you know your exact cost. Can your car haul a trailer? PODS is ungodly expensive.

Sell what you can. UHaul or other truck rental, the price you see online is going to be the price you pay, unless you damage the equipment. If you are worried about towing your car, get a friend to drive it for you while you drive the truck, or vice versa and they fly or take a bus back. Or you leave the car behind and take a bus or fly back to pick up your car.

If you have not towed a trailer before, doing so for the first time, with all your possessions sounds like a terrible idea.
We moved from MN to AZ and back a few years later using U-Haul. We towed our vehicle. But I grew up towing trailers. If you didn’t and don’t have some experience towing, I would suggest finding another way.
Driving a U-haul without a trailer, while challenging for people that don’t have much “truck driving” experience, is doable by most drivers.
Flying / bus back and driving your car separate as mentioned is a great idea.
