I go to my local city hall. Notary, fax, copies, and certified copies are all free. Don't know if other small towns offer those services, but worth checking.

Just go to any bank branch. Many of the bankers there are notaries and will do it for free

Or, if you have an account in a local bank, go there. Most likely, a teller or manager can notarize you documents for free.

Yeah, I was going to mention this. Most banks will do it for free if you are a customer. Charge a small fee if you aren't.

For $25 you can have it done online at home. I had to use it last week and someone across the country did it over webcam. Sworn statement and everything.

Some public libraries have notaries and will do it for free. I worked at a public library and they required every full time salaried employee to become a notary.

LPT: If you need a document notarized, don't go to a law firm. Go on Kijiji or Craigslist and some lawyer will do it for $10.
