Are you implying there’s a possible alternative?
blastuponsometerries t1_j0uhzjr wrote
Yes, actually.
But not a different life, a different attitude.
"Don't fuck it up" is way to high a standard. Everyone fucks it up, that is a major part of life. Such a high standard for yourself means you can only ever be stressed or disappointed in yourself. This makes it harder to learn and grow, ironically diminishing yourself. Especially common is something bad happens or someone fucks up something big. They can feel broken and ruined, regardless of how much other potential they have and don't see.
Let go of obsessively trying to craft the perfect "play through." Instead, embrace learning and growth, however messy fucked up way you arrive at it. Compassion for others is improved through accepting your own faults.
That is how you can actually lead a better life (just my opinion).
Rrraou t1_j0up8cf wrote
This, this is the answer. Fail faster, fail better. It's not about perfection, it's about not being afraid of getting back up and doing better.
abraxasisall t1_j0ujs4r wrote
I appreciate your sentiment, but I’m not talking about attitude. I’m literally talking about how our “play through” is a permanent death, no respawn run through. Have whatever attitude you want. That’s part of the beauty of life; live it how you want; I am making no commentary on that aspect of living. Merely that we are living and will someday die. Nothing will change that. Lol
blastuponsometerries t1_j0uldhc wrote
OF course
But how you approach that fact will make all the difference as you hit major roadblocks, derailments, and challenges to your core identity.
How we imagine ourselves and our lives going is mostly illusion in the face of an infinite universe and it helps keep us going. That illusion gets challenged and its far healthier to find a way forward in the face of temporary but shattering disappointment.
Even actually being able to comprehend the nature of permanent death itself requires a better understanding of consciousness than is current available. Simply a result of the level of scientific knowledge in the short time we exist.
We will not see the end of human advancement, only play our small part in its evolution. To me that is awe inspiring.
abraxasisall t1_j0v0gya wrote
As I said, I appreciate your sentiment and philosophical ponderings. However, regarding your ponderings, we can apply Hitchen’s razor: what can be asserted without evidence can also be dismissed without evidence. I prefer to see the world through a positivist epistemological perspective. Which is why I said all of the sentiment you’re discussing is hyperbole and I’m only stating that we live and then we die, definitively. Anything else is unknowable. Do what you want with the inbetween.

I've grappled with a problem in the past.
The problem is - sometimes life just sucks. For no reason at all, with no warning, with no justification, life just kicks you in the teeth. And it sucks. It hurts. And there is no why. There is no reason for it. There's only pain and misery, and the pain and misery of being in pain and misery. And it's all too easy to get wrapped up in your self pity, thinking of how much pain you're enduring and how unfair life is to you, and how much easier things would be if you didn't keep getting kicked in the teeth for no reason at all.
But eventually, I got tired of thinking like that. I still can't say that there really is a "why". I don't believe that some cosmic being is pulling the strings of the universe for some grander purpose. I don't think that there is some intrinsic lesson contained within each kick in the teeth. But that's what I realized - life's lessons aren't sitting out there on the ground, waiting around to be picked up like a penny on the sidewalk. They have to be created. The lessons of your life aren't something that is given to you, they are something you produce.
So every terrible experience in your life doesn't have some hidden meaning or purpose. It has an infinite number of meanings and purposes you could mine for a lifetime. You just have to put the work in.

Briefly last year, for his "wanted the pretty white people to ride off into the sunset together" line.
Which was said in reference to the game of thrones ending and people being upset about it. His allusion is that people were upset because all they wanted to see was a happy ending with the white people "riding off".....
Which is apocalyptically dumb because:
A. That's not why people where upset.
B. 'White people riding off into the sunset' is in fact the ending we got: the main poc female character gets deheadified. The not made up of white people calvary force and it's followers dies, returns, disappeares, returns again, and is excluded from any final explanation as to what the fuck they are doing now. The not white dudes infantry says 'fuck it' and leaves.
So we're left with: white girl that literally sails off into the sunset. Her older white sister who is now a Queen. Their brother cousin uncle whateverIforget who gets not executed for regicide and is told "whatevs, go live north with all these white folk". Their other brother turned white handicapped god emperor now forever-king....
...the white guy who bailed on school is now Grand Maester, the white guy that can't count or read is the Master of Coin, the white guy that learned to read last week is now Master of Ships, that big white chick is there too for reasons....and Dinklage's very own character is there too, as the number 2 ruling position.

He does seem to be pulling up the ladder behind him after becoming successful. I'm pretty sure there are less little people in good acting roles today than there were in the 1980s. Willow is like the only one in quite a long time that wasn't Dinklage, and that's only because it was a sequel of something made decades ago.

To be fair, the original source of the "eat the rich" line is a third party account of the President of the Paris Commune, Pierre Gaspard Chaumette, delivering a speech in 1793 in which he said:
>Rousseau faisait parti du peuple aussi, et il disait: 'Quand le peuple n'aura plus rien à manger, il mangera le riche.'
>Rousseau, who was also one of the people, said: 'When the people shall have nothing more to eat, they will eat the rich.'
No account of philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau saying it exists.

If you have to start over again, I'd question your level of 'experience'.
Success is usually a result of a gradual build of experience, capitalizing on an opportunity.
Repeated failure means you're doing it wrong and you nees to change your methods

This is Peter Dinklage from Game of Thrones. You're thinking of Brad Williams.

It's an easy mistake to make to be fair. If Brad had long hair and a goatee he could easily play as a movie double for Peter.

Huh, it’s kind of like starting over in a video game. Technically you’re back to square one but it goes so much easier now that you know what you’re doing. Good life lesson.
