I love Alan Watts. He’s been criticized a bit, mostly for not practicing what he preached it seems, but if you want a pretty good intro into the excellent philosophy of Taoism he’s great

Sometimes I feel like I have a lot of different personalities living in me. I used to think it was strange, but now I accept it and I even like it.

But this meme was posted here a week ago. I refuse to accept that internet memes have more consistent tenacious longevity than humans. This is like lettuce outlasting a prime minister. Change is vital but in one person's overall makeup the prominent feature had better be steady characteristics not fluid changing ones. Because that person made of more change than stability would be insufferably self interested and unpredictable and unreliable.

While that -is- true, consistency speaks volumes.

Especially when it comes to trust.

This is a fine platitude, but it's really dumb in real life. You absolutely ARE obligated to be consistent in life. I understand it's just saying to keep moving forward and grow, but it really is a dumb way to say it.

Make it five years and I'm here for it. Alan Watts spews a lot of crap but in general he's a nice gateway drug to eastern religion.

I'm the only one qualified to give this presentation. I can't just get someone else to do it.

Honestly, change 5 min to 5 years and it rings more truth.

Well you kind of owe it to your family one would think. Can’t just be 30 different personalities and expect a normal existence

It’s true. That isn’t what prevents change. It’s the knowledge that all of the people you love and who have come to love the person you were five minutes ago may not like the new you. And sometimes that’s ok, but it’s a non-trivial concern.

Trust is as only as good as the person who holds it. Your friends and family? They should trust you and you should do things to keep their trust. But your shitty boss who trusts you’ll show up to work every day even though your pay is shit? Who cares if they lose their trust in you?

alan watts !!! 🤯🤯🤯🤯 i love he's becoming well known

FarFetchedSketch t1_iu18p4t wrote

On a serious note, Watts'philosophy is hugely inspirational & wholesome, but he himself suffered from being a flakey father/husband and a lifelong alcoholic.

I listen to his talks regularly, especially when I need a dose of self-forgiveness, but anyone who sees him as a guru should know he certainly had his demons and quotes like the one above ought to be taken with a grain of salt.
