It motivates you to look out for your own interests above all else. You know, like a healthy society should.

If you don't look out for your own interests you'll have a hard time looking out for anybody else's. Like how you put your own oxygen mask on first before putting one on your kid.
flunky_the_majestic t1_iqxavpq wrote
But you do, in fact, put one on your kid when you're in a position to do so. And probably even a passed-out stranger next to you. But this advice is like telling you to put on your oxygen mask, then not help anyone else with theirs because they should have to figure it out for themselves.

Oh my god I can imagine that and what I hate most is that it's 150% plausible to see it with over 150 likes on Facebook. The only thing preventing me from trying that is that I'm sure someone did it before.

I know the painting (and hopefully the post) is intended to be funny, and it did make me laugh. However as general advice, I think it's terrible. Unfortunately I have worked with many people that think this is true. I don't believe that the way to succeed is to hold others back. True subject matter experts are not afraid of sharing their knowledge and recognize that teaching others does not diminish their value.
Now for the exceptions. This is a good rule for certain types of work or circumstances. Two that come easily to mind are negotiators and magicians. Keep your secrets close!
RalekTheOne t1_iqwp6kh wrote
Maybe they're anti-social, or they hold back cuz they can't explain and if you explain your process to fellow peers you may hold off because of.. that fraud feeling I can't remember what it's called.

I was about to say this. I'm in finance and sales and half my job is negotiating. If I'm not careful with what information I keep close to my chest I suck at my job ha

I rarely comment stuff. I extremely dislike this! It is wrong. Help others around you to make society grow. You are a product of your environment, but your environment is therefore also a product of you... Hence your are in the... Fucking environment. If all kept good stuff for themselves, it would be a shot environment . If everyone shared, then all would be awesome and they would teach you stuff as well. Give value always.
