In two years I went from well below the poverty line and having to choose between food, rent and utilities, to middle class with a home of my own.

Then inflation hit. And I pray to the gods every damn day to keep an eye on the ones still stuck in the circumstances I was in.

This made me chuckle because it's so true.

I remember how at the start of the pandemic, I lost my job, my dream job. I never felt so depressed before I mean complete despair.

Literally roughly two years later I got a job for company/industry that I never thought I'd be in and being in the most financially stable point of my life where I can help my family and friends.

2 years ago, I was at a company that I hated. They advertised themselves as a financial company but were really just in the business of high interest loans. And I mean HIGH interest, like 550%. I couldn't get on board with that, taking advantage of people in a tough situation. As soon as I realized what it was, I tried to look for a new job, but it took me about a year and a half to find one. Now I work for the best company I have ever worked for, making twice the money I was then(literally). Things can change faster than you think.

Dude doesn't live in my city if he thinks it takes 2 years to save up for a house.

fubar_giver t1_jcnr3ae wrote

Prices have been rising so fast, 2 years ago saving up for a home would actually taken more like 4 years, then after a year of saving you would still be 5 years away, and today after two full years of saving, it will only take 6 more years for a down-payment.

Schnozzlerite t1_jcpbgoj wrote

Well, it does say "you could be ON YOUR WAY TO buying a new house", not "You could be buying a new house".

This quote is painfully true. I went from unemployed and $50 bucks to my name scared I couldn’t pay rent to being employed and a home owner in two years. Your life can change so quickly.

2 years ago I was in a pit of despair. And no matter how hard I worked it seemed like I was never going to be able to financially support my newborn and wife. It was worse than paycheck to paycheck as I was having to rely on the money my wife had saved up and it seemed inevitable that the sinking ship of my life would eventually be unrecoverable. My work effort however was relentless and even though it felt like I had nothing more to give I found ways to make my efforts more and more efficient leading to even bigger output and presence that eventually was noticed. The people who noticed me helped me considerably and without them I wouldn’t be where I am today, which is in a position that sustains the cost of me and my family. But the biggest thing I took from all of it is never stop the process and always find ways to have a higher throughput through efforts both physically and analytically.

Two years ago I just started my first job out of grad school, making the jump into the unknown and hoping to get out of a bad situation that caused me a lot of grief and anxiety (Don't try for a PhD folks, you don't need it). A couple weeks ago I celebrated my two year anniversary with my company with a promotion. I love what I do, I love the people I work with, I love the flexibility that comes with my job, and I've learned way more during my time here than I did in grad school.

Over the last two years I've saved up to buy a home and have developed a long-term plan for what I want my life to look like. In two years' time I will have purchased my first home and will be on my way to building a portfolio of investment property. If I hadn't made that jump, I'd still be spinning my wheels in grad school.

A great Formula 1 team principal once said: If you've got a problem with you car, change your fucking car.

What does that mean? You have agency over your own life. Where you can be in two years is a direct result of the decisions you make now. So go get it. You're floating through space on a rock until you die. Do you really have anything better to do?

NO JOKE!!!! 2 years ago I was a homeless addict, living off of the generosity of others. Going in and out of jail due to my addiction......

I got out of prison December 19 2021. Since then, I have stayed clean, and SLAM DUNKED long term goals that I have been setting for myself in rehabs and treatments for years. Got a job in the hospitality industry, and took to it like a fish in water. Worked my way up in the industry to Asst. General Manager of a local resort. I have tattoos on my face and hands. I have 8 felony convictions.

I just finished my first semester of College. I am pursuing my associates in Business and Marketing, and want to eventually open my own high class boutique hotel and restaurant. I love my life. I am more satisfied than I have ever been.

I wish my sister believed this. The other day a friend of a friend offered her a job doing something for 200$ but she didn't take it because she's too shy. I tried to tell her it could possibly lead to more and that she shouldn't pass up an opportunity, but she just smiled and said she wouldn't do it.

It makes me so mad.
