In theory this is just an extension of stuff already seen elsewhere like self service checkouts and remotely operated checkouts.
However Japanese culture adds another dimension to this.
There is also the fact, that attempts to remote in-person work in stores in places like the US has resulted in the work being done in countries with very low wages for a few cents per hours.
There aren't too many low wage countries full of people who speak Japanese, so these jobs are more likely to stay in Japan. The article mentions making use of workforce that otherwise could not easily work in person due to disabilities etc. It remains to be seen how true that turns out to be.

I think it's neat. As a disabled person I've considered trying to do something like be a game moderator for a self hosted minecraft server but now I dont have reliable internet. I was hoping to be able to do something like this as my condition worsens. I would be totally comfortable interacting as an avatar.

What's actually going to happen is that your job will be outsourced to Nicaragua so they can pay the cashiers pennies.
That has literally already happened in Canada with the fast food chain Freshii.

I'm laughing but it isn't too funny really. Gone before you can blink. It's probably better I keep moving forward anyways I just thought it might be fun to be an old shopkeeper because you see some wild stuff and talk to so many people.
Pretty much anything I wanted to do is changing rapidly and if I were 10 years younger I'd be on top of it all. I'm not too old but I'm fairly specialized now as a bullshit artist and .gonna have to stick with it now.
