When I was there I got to work with some engineers who’d previously been on those teams. The limitless budget thing is definitely not true, and even then I don’t think spending money on R&D for potential new products is ever a bad thing when you can afford it. I’m sure they’re happy with things like the iPad coming from a “pie in the sky” idea.

A big difference between Apple and Google is that Google tests all it's stuff publically and Apple tests all it's stuff internally. Apple probably has a product graveyard as large as Google's. The difference is that they killed them before they had a chance to disappoint the public.
The thing about innovation is that they have to be pie in the sky ideas. Because if the idea isn't at least a little crazy then it means it makes sense. And if it makes sense, then it means that everyone else is already working on it and you're too late.

In California, every driver involved in the testing of autonomous technology has to be registered. Every vehicle involved in testing has to be registered as well with the DMV and has to have a special permit to drive on public roads.
Thanks to those regulations, we now know that Apple’s autonomous driving dream has reached impressive size. The company increased the number of test drivers to 201 while its fleet of test vehicles remains at 67.
It is clear that over the years Project Titan evolved into three separate programs. While the autonomous car has been on and off the drawing board many times over, autonomous driving technology took its own course. Apple can easily leverage its expertise in hardware and software to develop advanced self-driving tech and it aims to achieve it before its rivals.

yeah I mean as someone who has never been able to drive due to crappy eyesight, I want autonomous vehicles to work at scale. I don't see it as a quick process, the work that companies like Didi, Cruise, and Waymo are doing are just the tip of the iceberg long term and the more expertise and R&D in the sector (especially if projects are shuttered and teams move to competitors) the better.

The more I hear about the innerworkings of Apple the more it resembles a bigger slower valve.
Thousands of engineers and designers working on pie in the sky ideas with nearly limitless budgets and no timeliness, whatever is interesting they work on with no real end.
And when something is not perfect employees shift to other projects or decide to scrap it internally. There must be so many ridiculously useless things being worked on at Apple.
Reminds me of hearing Mark Rober talk about him pitching ideas and them just building teams around it, making an ar headset generate games based on the g forces of the car.
Why is stuff like this even a priority?
