The first thing that strike me was the gators .Lousiana and Florida are full of gators.Imagine how many europeans/Spanish were eaten by gators when the geography was unknown. I always felt that in one of my previous births, i was eaten by gator or crocodile so i never go too deep in a river, anywhere.

Imagine... youre a Spanish sailor. You see the land from your ship. grab a musket and a couple of guys on a skiff and head over to make land but it's just miles and miles and miles of endless primordial mangrove swamps, full of 32' (39' ?)Gators, cottonmouth, and flocks of birds. Now your miles into the glades and it's getting dark...

That sounds much better! I don’t actually know if there are gators there but living in the PNW has taught me that gators exist in any southern body of water, regardless of size. Your bathtub? That’s a gator hammock.
Dommdivaa OP t1_j6jrwja wrote
I'm assuming gators will cool off anywhere. This was during a swamp tour, gators there aren't hungry or territorial- they're fed well by the tour guides. Nonetheless they are super cute.
time_drifter t1_j6jsyxw wrote
Feeding the gators seems like a really bad idea. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was illegal but who knows. I did a tour in Florida and we had to almost drive the airboat over one before they would move.

Louisiana built different 😭

Had my canoe tipped over once by a goose who thought I was going to feed him so yeah, that's probably not a good thing to do with a gator.
MidnightPhoenix5055 t1_j6kj62f wrote
Okay but they are territorial. And will give chase. And yeah, feeding is definitely a bad idea unless you wanna become the entrée. They are all-but-immortal death machines. (Unless you manage to hold their jaws shut, but I’m still not getting that close)
Dommdivaa OP t1_j6kle04 wrote
I'm now calling them "immortal death machines". I read they can jump high too.
MidnightPhoenix5055 t1_j6kn999 wrote
It’s wild because their cells keep regenerating. The main thing that kills them is a larger alligator or food scarcity. Otherwise the just keep growing. And not so much “high” as “far.” Propel themselves up a bank twice their body length fairly easily.

You'll be ok. If you see a gator just knock him in the head with a stump
Dommdivaa OP t1_j6jul0i wrote
What about kicking/punching them in the nose like sharks?
SplodyPants t1_j6jvbvs wrote
Oh I wouldn't suggest either. That's actually from an old song I learned playing GTA San Andreas.
"It ain't legal huntin' gator in the Looseeanna swamp boy!"
smokeymodelo t1_j6k3mm4 wrote
That song is named Amos Moses by Jerry Reed.
SplodyPants t1_j6k4r15 wrote
Cool! Thanks. I never knew the name. I don't listen to country music but I always loved that song. I just listened to it on spotify. That guy played the truck driver in Smokey and The Bandit!

It just doesn't seem as swampy without Cypress trees with the Spanish moss hanging down. Maybe I'm thinking of a Bayou.

I lived in Batton Rouge for only about a year when I was 18. My favorite memory was going to the bayou with friends to catch crawfish. With about 10 traps we filled up a bucket in one hour. Those bayou crawfish are way tastier than the farm-raised ones.
